HUNDREDS OF SPECTATORS DENOUNCE KLAN AT RALLY

THE ORLANDO SENTINEL

Hundreds of spectators chanted and shouted obscenities as 21 Ku Klux Klan members rallied on the steps of the Ohio Statehouse on Saturday. Police used a chemical spray to stop about 20 demonstrators who tried to push down a chain-link fence separating the Klan from the crowd. Six people were arrested on charges of assault, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct, police said. Two people were injured - a woman demonstrator who fell and a sheriff's deputy who was bitten and scratched. Neither was hospitalized. The rally, which was organized to recruit members, was the second Klan gathering of the day in Ohio. About 250 people attended a rally outside the Clinton County Courthouse. No violence was reported.
