Have you ever run the McAfee Consumer Products Removal Tool?

Is it the same computer - not necessarily the same problem - as in this other recent thread of yours? => http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-update/windows-update-will-not-get-updates-windows-7/7c4f2230-e164-4bad-8b9f-184e8b5a6c26

No I haven't ran that particular Product,  also no its not the same computer .  I have tried what fixed the other one to no avail & much much more.   Don't know what it is about Windows Update that has these issues.  I know its about virues & Malware & they don't want you to fix it, but I can't find any virus or Malware, so frustrating......... I will try the McAfee

Thanks

Assuming Win7 64-bit with Internet Explorer 11 (IE11) installed...

We'll need to "dig a little deeper" here. Please answer each of the following [admittedly tedious] diagnostic questions in a correspondingly-numbered list in your very next reply, preferably without quoting my post:

1a. When (approx. date) did you purchase the Dell computer?

1b. Did Win7 64-bit come preinstalled on the computer when you bought it?

1c. Has Windows 10 ever been installed?

1d. Have you ever done a Repair Install and/or a clean install of Windows 7?

2. What is the full name of your installed anti-virus application or security suite and when (approx. date) does your current subscription expire? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender) are installed? What third-party firewall (if any)?

3. Has a(nother) Norton application or a McAfee application EVER been installed on the computer since you bought it?

4. Is KB3139929, KB3140735, KB3138910, KB3139940, KB3140410, KB3139914, KB3139398, KB3139852, KB3135983 and/or KB3135988] listed in Installed Updates (not Update History)? [1]

5. How about KB3138612, KB3123862, KB3035583, KB2952664 and/or KB2990214?

6. Assuming Java is installed => Is Java Version 8 Update 77 (or higher) installed? TEST HERE USING INTERNET EXPLORER ONLY! => http://java.com/en/download/uninstallapplet.jsp [2]

7. Is Adobe Flash Player v21.0.0.213 (or higher) installed? TEST HERE USING INTERNET EXPLORER ONLY! => http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/

8a. When (exact date) was Internet Explorer 11 installed according to Installed Updates?

8b. What Update Version & KB number are displayed in the second line of text in IE11's Help | About [Alt+H+A] tab; e.g., Update Version: 11.0.99 (KB1231231) ?

8c. Is Firefox 45.0.1 (or higher) and/or Google Chrome version 49.0.2623.112 (or higher) or any other alternate browser installed?

9. Are you in the habit of using "Registry cleaners" (e.g., Registry Mechanic; System Mechanic; RegCure; RegClean Pro; Advanced SystemCare; Registry Booster; McAfee QuickClean; Glary Utilities; AVG PC TuneUp; Norton Registry Cleaner; PCTools Optimiser; SpeedUpMyPC; PC Doctor; TuneUp Utilities; WinMaximizer; WinSweeper; Comodo System Cleaner; Advanced System Optimizer; CCleaner's Registry Cleaner component)?

Answer-by-number (like above):

1. In Windows Explorer [WinKey+E], navigate to & right-click on:

  • C:\Program Files\AVG <=this folder

Select PROPERTIES: What's the CREATED date displayed on the resulting GENERAL tab?

2. Had the McAfee free-trial period (or your paid subscription) already expired by the time you replaced it with AVG Free or any other anti-virus application?

3. When (exact date) did you run the McAfee Consumer Products Removal Tool?

  • Sometimes it's too late for the removal tool to "come to the rescue." This may be one of those times.

4. When & why was MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware (MBAM) installed? Is it MBAM Premium or MBAM Free? Has MBAM ever detected & quarantined anything since it's been installed?

5. Is Programs and Features | Turn Windows features on or off <=this pane also blank/empty?

6. Is Internet Explorer working (e.g., can you open IE11 to this page)?

7. Is Google Chrome version 49.0.2623.112 (or higher) installed?

8. Do you have backups of ALL the changes CCleaner's Registry Cleaner component has EVER made to the computer?

1a. Open Internet Explorer (only!) to this page => http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/

1b. What version is displayed in the VERSION INFO box on the page?

2a. Is MBAM Premium (paid) or MBAM Free installed?

2b. When did you last update MBAM & run a scan?

2c. Are you MBAM Scan logs available? [<=that's JUST a question, not a request!]

3. Has Chrome auto-updated to version 49.0.2623.112 (or higher) yet?

COMMENT: There are times when it's too late for the McAfee removal tool to "come to the rescue" - especially for those who've been using registry cleaners. This may be another one of those times!

Shows 21.0.0.213 version

Free MBAM

Approximately the day before I posted here , trying to find a solution.

Logs are available

yes, 50.0.2661.75m

FYI A couple things seem to have transpired since my last post to you

1.  It now seems that Windows yesterday I seen was downloading Updates in the TASK bar (the update Icon appears their) & indeed updates has shown up in "Installed Updates" just for that day so far & the "Shut Down" button showed  as it did before "Shut down to install updates".  Hey progress, so I open Windows update  under Control Panel & clicked Update but it still shows RED "X" before clicking & after a short time the same error 80070422 appears.

Don't know if it had anything to do with it or not but I kept running the FixIts I had used a few days ago.

Thanks

Have you run the Windows Update troubleshooter (again) since you ran the McAfee removal tool on the 9th?

Have you updated & scanned with MBAM Free again since the 9th?

Is KB3148198, KB3145739, KB3146963, KB3146706, KB3149090, and/or KB3142042 listed in Installed Updates - or listed as failed updates in your Update History now?

Thanks for your feedback.

I have ran the troubleshooter again & again after the 9th and I have ran MBAM since the 9th also found nothing.  Also ran several Online Virus scan both in Windows & Safe Mode. None of the listed updates are in Installed Updates or Update History.   There is nothing listed whatsoever in Installed Updates its Blank,  FYI the Red X is still Visible & when I click it shows a status bar for short time then the same error.  Several  updates are listed in Update History (approx. 86) , but none of your list.  In Update  History it shows the first one started in 4/10/16 thru today.   FYI I misspoke in my last post to you Nothing showed up in Installed Updates it was in Update History just to clarify.  FYI Since the KB3148198

wasn't listed I went to Microsoft & downloaded the manual install & when I ran it stated "this update is un applicable to this system"  haven't tried the rest yet.

Thanks
