Clemente was so poor as a kid, that he and his friends would collect lost golf ballls from a local course, then wrap them in twine to use as baseballs.

Clemente dealt with tremendous racism as the first Lantino in Major League Baseball. From death threats and racial slurs, to even things that may seem minor, but were a huge deal such as broadcasters and card companies refusing to use his first name. Instead calling him “Bob.”

Roberto Clemente said that he was a “double nigger” in the U.S. because he was black, and a Latino/non-native English speaker. So he recieved twice the hatred, basically. Hence why he was so vocal regarding the Civil Rights Movement.

During Spring Training, Clemente stayed with a local black family since he wasn’t allowed to stay at the hotel in Fort Myers with the rest of the team.
At the Pirates annual team golf outing, Clemente and other black teammates simply weren’t invited.

Roberto was an avid supporter of MLK. Dr. King spent time with Clemente on his farm in Puerto Rico.
When MLK was assassinated, it devastated Roberto. He urged MLB to postpone Pirates opening day in 1968 against the Astros. The game was scheduled for April 8th...

...which was the day prior to Martin Luther King’s memorial. So the game was postponed out of respect and admiration — and so the players could mourn — until April 10th thanks to Roberto and his Pirates teammates.

Oh and don’t forget... Roberto Clemente was a Marine Corps veteran.

As most know. Clemente hit exactly 3,000* hits. (*Buccos fans add the asterisk because he allegedly had a hit prior to his 3,000th that was erroneously called an error.)

His 3,000th hit, a double, was his last as he died in a plane crash on NYE delivering supplies to earthquake victims in Nicaragua.

There’s SO MUCH more about Roberto Clemente but that’s enough from me tonight.
I highly recommend everyone research about his extraordinary life. He was an incredible baseball player and even better person and humanitarian.
