After two months waiting, it finally arrived today: vol 8 of the @aelawsocial booklet series on ancient European languages & writings, my "Cisalpine Celtic", with editorial assistance by @CCeLL_project. Lepontic and Cisalpine Gaulish never looked so good!

The charter invokes the Lord of Paulin : "Sicart vescomte de Lautrec e seihner de Paulinis..." The fiefdom of Paulin was among the most important of the Languedoc. By 1288 thirty-two vassals had pledged fidelity to the Baron of Paulin. Below is the commune of Paulinet today. 2/2

Well, if you like exquisitely illuminated manuscripts of the pre-eminent work in all Italian literature, produced less than a century after it was first written, then this isn't a bad little book, I suppose...

Without trying to be diverse, in the last 24 hours I’ve tweeted about books & manuscripts written in: Georgian Raetic Lusitanian Iberian Gaulish Faliscan Celtiberian Latin English Lithuanian Martian Occitan Runes Shuishu I *must* improve my coverage of non-Earth-based scripts!

Shuishu uses pictographs which are similar to jiaguwen (甲骨文) found on Shang Oracle bones and the jinwen (金文) on bronzes from the Shang & Zhou dynasties. It is widely believed that the script is a “living fossil”, which represents an echo of these earlier ancient scripts. 2/3

The Shui (水族) are an ethnic group of nearly 400 000 in SE Guizhou. The Shui script, known as "Shuishu" (水書), is used exclusively for ritual purposes. Shuishu is one of the two main surviving hieroglyphic scripts in China, together with the better known Naxi Dongba script. 1/3

This set has the bookplate of Carl Jedvard Bonde, and was subsequently in the library of Ericsberg. Some of the stones shown in these engravings no longer exist today, so these are our only record of the original rune-stone inscriptions. 3/3

In the 1830s a small new edition was made using the surviving original copper plates, of which this is an example. This example has 119 of the plates. Willard Fiske, the greatest ever collector of runic books, was never able to obtain a copy of this book for his collection. 2/3

One of the rarest of all runic books. These plates depicting 118 rune-stones were engraved under the supervision of Johannes Bureus around 1650, but the planned work for which they were intended was never completed. A few copies were made at the time - only 5 survive today. 1/3

Just south of Albi lies the city of Castres. Burlats is just east of Castres, in the modern-day Parc of Haut-Languedoc. A number of Roman & medieval buildings still stand in Burlats, including the Adelaide Pavilion, where amour courtois (“courtly love”) allegedly originated. 2/2

In the 1890s the medium Hélène Smith claimed to be in communications with the people of the planet Mars. She provided images of Mars' plantlife and also the key to the Martian alphabet. It could be the future - the new international/intergalactic language.

Lithuanian is often said to be the most conservative living Indo-European language, retaining features of Proto-Indo-European now lost in other languages. Early books in Lithuanian are seldom seen. This is the Bible in Lithuanian, set in fraktur, and printed in Frankfurt in 1853.

Photo of a leaf in a medieval manuscript: folio 8 recto in Yale, Beinecke, MS 589. Two columns of Latin text—the first with 32 lines, the second with 40 lines—both in black ink with touches of red. Nearly half the width, and the entire length, of column two is taken up by a massively-enlarged majuscule ‘I’ (for “IN principio”) rendered as a long blue rectangle decorated with white highlights, plus a dense mass of intricate red pen-work both within and without the initial. At the top of the page is an enlarged header in alternating red and blue majuscules.
