On March 30, Houston Chronicle published a China-related editorial. Full of extreme-words and groundless accusations, the article disgustingly shows the author’s ignorance, prejudice, and even hatred towards China, by which the Chronicle’s fairness and professionalism is severely questioned.
If the newspaper did not know about the facts of China’s efforts fighting the pandemic, the Consulate General would be willing to provide some.
·On February 13, Consul General CAI Wei specifically introduced China’s measures fighting the pandemic in detail to the editorial board of the Chronicle. C.G. Cai answered all the questions raised, including the case of Dr. LI Wenliang, in a very transparent and candid way. Please check the meeting records.
·Since the beginning of March, the Consulate General has been constantly introducing China’s measures and positions fighting the pandemic to Chronicle via e-mail, which has accounted for 8 times so far. In particular, the timeline of communications on COVID-19 between China and the US since January 3 is explicitly listed in the March 20’s email. Please check the e-mail box.
·Since the outbreak of COVID-19, the Consulate General has been briefing the US public on China’s efforts against the pandemic and cooperation between China and the international community through the Consulate’s website, Facebook and other ways, telephone conversation last Friday between C.G. Cai and Mayor Sylvester Turner for instance. Please log on the website.
However, it appears that the author of the editorial has turned a deaf ear to the above-mentioned facts. Or, eyed only on selective things? Or just intuitively ignored the facts at all?
“You can never wake up a person who pretends to sleep.” Stubbornly immersed in his/her own illusions and prejudices, one will finally shoot himself/herself in the foot. It is not conducive to solving one’s own problem by blaming others for his own despair, anger, or even incompetence, not to mention deflecting responsibilities, making rumors, slandering, and discrediting. IT WON’T HELP.
The unprecedented outbreak of COVID-19 proves once again in a no less than tragic way that all mankind lives in a community with a shared future. No country is immune from the outbreak. Only through unity and cooperation can we overcome the difficulties together.
At such a moment, it is imperative for the international community to strengthen confidence, act with unity and work together in a collective response. We must comprehensively step up international cooperation and foster greater synergy so that humanity as one could win the battle against such a major infectious disease.
Acting with openness, transparency, and responsibility, China has made all-out efforts to combat COVID-19 and conduct international cooperation: we have provided Chinese approach for fighting COVID-19 through multilateral platforms such as the Extraordinary G20 Leaders' Summit and World Health Organization (WHO); Chinese enterprises have returned to work, expanding their production capacity, working around the clock to produce medical protection supplies, and building a solid foundation to global fight against COVID-19; via cooperation with other countries including the US, China has contributed to the urgent research and test of vaccine…
China’ efforts have been highly appreciated by the international community. The WHO recently said that countries like Singapore and the ROK have made full use of the precious time China bought for the world and taken necessary prevention and control measures to stem the spread of the pandemic.
COVID-19 presents a huge challenge to all human beings. Whether you like it or not, THE FACT IS: under the strong leadership of President Xi Jinping, China has basically brought the rapid spread of COVID-19 under control within a short period of time and achieved positive results in combating the pandemic at home.
We urge Houston Chronicle to refrain from stigmatizing China by discarding prejudices, and listen to rational voices, respect the basic facts and observe the professionalism and integrity.
