This is false. There is no such word as "Nusa" meaning "island" in the entire Sanskrit language. Such a word is not attested ANYWHERE in Sanskrit literature. That word structure even contradicts internal Sandhi rules of Sanskrit language. twitter.com/porbotialora/s…

This is but just one of the various terms used to refer to the deity. There are other terms like Atingkok Maru Sidaba as well. These deities were worshipped by some hill tribes like Rongmei as well who would've likely preserved the original names.

Further, the native Sanamahi religion of Meiteis shows clear influence of Vedic religion that predates medieval Vaishnavism of Manipur. Vedic God Indra was worshiped by Meiteis under the name Soraren (<Surendra) Vedic Guru Brihaspati was worshiped by the name Guru Sidaba.

modern Meiteilon is ripe with Sanskrit loanwords, but varies drastically from old Meiteilon even without those same words. These are but few of the words that got replaced overtime.

Having influence isn't the same as following the very same religion. Even the Hill Nagas and Kukis of the region have had their religions influenced by Hinduism too, but they obviously didn't identify as being Hindus before the Christians started converting them.

The very fact that ancient religion of Manipuri Meiteis used Sanskrit names for their Gods proves beyond any doubt that "Sanskritization" was older than 18th century. To falsely claim Manipuris had no influence of Hinduism before 18th century is playing into hands of separatists

Those Sanskrit equivalent terms were added after Sanskritization. If you read the puyas, some of which were burnt by Pamheiba, you will find the native terms as well. This is akin to how Dewi Sri is an amalgamation of a native goddess and Lakshmi in Java.

Hinduism was NOT the state religion of the kingdom until Meidingu Pamheiba made it. The kings built temples for communities like Bishnupriyas and immigrant Brahmins throughout Lamangdong as well. Doesn't mean Meitei masses were as well.

The temple of Vishnu (Bishnupur, Manipur) was built in 15th century. Now people don't say that "only kings & members of royal family adopted Hinduism before 18th century". How do you know? Nobody took a census in medieval times! asiguwahaticircle.gov.in/vishnu.html

You can draw parallels between deities of various religions. It doesn't mean they are the same. Bathou shows parallels with Shiva but that doesn't mean he is Shiva. These influences can obviously be a result of cultural exchange with neighbouring kingdoms like Pyu.

Only a few members of the royalty had converted at that point. There are no scriptures that say Vaishnavism was popular among the masses. The temple at Lamangdong was built at the advice of a Brahmin because of an idol gifted by the king of Pong, who were most likely Buddhists.

You say Manipuris weren't Hindus until 18th century. That "Sanskritization" happened only in 18th cent. Circumstantial evidence shows this isn't true. Earliest known temple of Manipur is Vishnu temple dating to 15th century Earliest inscription from Manipur uses Saka calendar twitter.com/porbotialora/s…

But the masses converted under his grandson, who is credited to have brought synthesis of Meitei and Hindu cultures. It was under him that the term Manipur began to get caught up, but the native name still hasn't been discarded. Assamese called it Meklee, Kokborok Mekhli...

The adoption of the term largely owes to his grandfather Meidingu Pamheiba, who was born of a Chothe woman. But he was a follower of Ramanandi school and not Gaudiya Vaishnavism unlike his grandson. He adopted the name Gopal Singh on his conversion.

Your dates are incorrect. Manipur was Sanskritized in 18th century, not 16th. There were some members of the royalty that adopted different schools of Hinduism before but the masses adopted Gaudiya Vaishnavism only after the rise of Meidingu Bhagyachandra (Chingthangkhomba)

It must be mentioned that the Manipura of Mahabharata is near the Mahendragiri mountain (on the Andhra-Odisha border in Gajapati district/Srikakulam district). Today's "Manipur" in the North East got its name after 16th century. (It was earlier known as Kangleipak)
