Unfortunately, the reports about the damage and recent history of Babylon have mostly been written by non-Iraqis - many who have framed the Occupation of Iraq and Babylon in particular as some silly mistake when in fact the US military saw it as a trophy of its Empire+conquest.

There has been theft of large amount of artefacts in 2003 and 2004 - even US/Polish military taking with them whatever they could find or extract from the site. Bricks from this Mushhushshu-dragon reliefs, a symbol of the God Marduk, were extracted from the walls.

We need to move beyond these misleading ways in which we look at Iraq's heritage. There nothing great about it if we only copy and paste photos that allude to the 'first civilisations' and all of that. So what? What are we doing now about Iraq's cultural heritage?

I know lots of people, including Iraqis, like to clap and present photos of how great Iraq's past is - well, thats not enough, frankly. It doesnt help to think of Iraq as the 'cradle of civilisation' if Iraq's cultural infrastructure has been torn apart by four decades of war.

The decolonisation of Babylon starts in Iraq, not outside the country, for what we have seen so far - from the ways in which Babylon is displayed in US/European museums, ways in which locale and people have been erased from narratives, continues to be reproduced.

its time Iraqis write about Babylon, about its history, its connections to the people of Ancient but also today's Iraq. We should de-colonise Babylon by first asking questions that have only been addressed through purview of those vested in legacies of European Empire

Babylon's history has to be told by Iraqis as the bulk of what has been written is told through the so called European Empire gaze, which still lingers in US-European museums, writings, books, and the narrow construction of this history.
