Kakinoshima Jomon Archaeological Site
A wonderfully preserved ancient settlement
This site overlooking the Pacific Ocean is outstanding evidence of the long-term settlement of Jomon people in the area from 7000 to 1000 BCE. Many important artifacts have been discovered here, including some of the world’s oldest lacquerware, which dates back 9,000 years. The 190m-long earth mounds are believed to have been built over the course of 1,000 years for use in various rituals.
