Perception is what matters at the end of the day. Most Bengalis in India are Hindus, hence why Bengali Hindu is what is correlated to the term (excluding most of NE where it's reverse)
When people are asked what they think of "Kashmiris", they think of KMs first and foremost.

It's not just Amrikis though. It's practically the whole world. You can ask a British to an Arab, they use "Bengali" synonymously with Bengali Ms.
Numbers are what matter at the end of the day. Even Indian media mean KMs when they use the term "Kashmiri", separate from KPs.

First of all, there are only ~6M Kashmiri speakers in Indian administered Jammu & Kashmir which obviously includes Kashmiri Hindus.
Also, can we talk about how Mirpur was 20% Hindu-Sikh in 1947 but is 0% now?

Punjabi would either mean Muslim or Sikh outside India. Sikhs are overly represented though because of heavy immigration pattern.
Punjabi Sunnis in UK larp as "Kashmiris" even though they speak only Punjabi or English.
Even many Indians don't know Punjabi Hindus exist at all.

Ryukyuans are prohibited to learn in their mother language. Instead, they are forced to learn the language of the Yamatos (Japanese).
This is reminiscent of the English banning Welsh in Wales. Look up on "Welsh Not" policy.

Whether you like it or not, when the word "Bengali" is used outside India, the first group people refer to are Bengali Muslims, not Bengali Hindus.

Once a Bengali Hindu converts to Islam, he no more remains a Bengali. His allegiance is to the Great Islamic Tradition(Urdu & Arabia).
Hindu & Bengali: the two terms are coterminus to each other. A Bengali is verily a Hindu.
We are Hindu by nationhood and Bengali by ethnicity.
