Citing years of declining enrollment and annual budget deficits, Holy Trinity Regional School in West Harwich will close in June at the end of the academic year, officials said.
WEST HARWICH - Citing years of declining enrollment and annual budget deficits, Holy Trinity Regional School in West Harwich plans to close in June at the end of the current academic year, according to a press release today.
The decision to close the pre-kindergarten through fifth grade school was announced in meetings yesterday to faculty, staff and parents by officials from the Catholic Schools Office of the Fall River Diocese, the release said.
Diocesan Superintendent of Schools Michael S. Griffin today said the school’s budget deficit for the 2011-2012 school year will be approximately $150,000 and had been averaging $96,000 for the past four years.
“The numbers aren’t close to where they need to be,” Griffin said in an interview with the Times today. “The decision had to be made and the decision is final.”
Parents gathered in the school’s lobby this morning said they were shocked when told of the school’s closing at last night’s meeting. Many said they mistakenly thought the diocese had called the meeting to address a recently submitted 500-name petition asking for the addition of a sixth grade.
“They never told us that we had any opportunity to raise tuition or do fundraising to bridge the gap in funding,” said Joe Baker of Yarmouth, who has two children at the school. Baker said he offered to raise the tuition by a $1,000 dollars to help close the annual funding gap.
“This is really about capitalism and not about Catholicism,” Baker said.
In the press release, Griffin said the diocese kept the school open “in the hopes of turning the enrollment around. However, despite the dedicated efforts of the Holy Trinity school community, this has not occurred.”
Diocesan school officials said they will work with other Catholic schools in the region to provide places for students who wish to continue in the Catholic school system, the press release said.
Other Catholic schools in the vicinity of Trinity include St. Pius X School in South Yarmouth, which has pre-kindergarten through eighth grade, and St. Francis Xavier Preparatory School in Hyannis that begins with 5th grade.
Griffin also said that staff from Holy Trinity would be “given strong consideration” to fill vacancies next year in diocesan schools on the Cape or in the Greater New Bedford area.
Holy Trinity Regional School opened in September 1994 with kindergarten through second grade in a building on Holy Trinity Parish property off Route 28 that had once housed a parish school from 1965 to 1971, the press release said. The new school grew, providing kindergarten through eighth grade until 2006 when the middle school was eliminated and pre-kindergarten added.
