Why the black widow packs such a punch
No, we’re not talking about Scarlett Johansson. The venom injected by a black widow bite is powerful enough to kill a grown man, but it turns out that the spider’s venom isn’t actually all that different from that of more benign arachnids—it’s just more concentrated. LiveScience reports that one of the most lethal components of spiders’ venom, a neurotoxin called a-latrotoxin, is found at much higher levels in the black widow and that its effect is enhanced by a “cocktail” of other toxins as well. Researchers speculate that the widow evolved its potency in order to expand its food options to larger animals.
