Leak Reveals Tesla's Upcoming 'Million Mile Battery'

Tesla is soon to announce a new type of battery. that they have dubbed as the "million mile" battery, that is reported to bring down the cost of electric vehicles to the same price point of gas engine cars.

It will also improve battery life immensely. This new battery will be used in Tesla's Model 3 luxury sedan, which is due to be made and then sold in China later this year, or possible at the start of next year. The battery is reported to be a collaboration between Tesla and a team of academic battery experts, who were recruited directly by Elon Musk himself.

Turning away from Cobalt

This new technology uses low-cobalt and cobalt-free battery systems that will reduce the impact that constant use and recharging have on the inside of the batteries. This will increase their capacity and overall life. Cobalt to this day remains one of the most expensive and environmentally damaging metals in the production of electric car batteries, so the switch will also drop the price of electric cars, allowing them to be more affordable and accessible - driving forward Tesla's goal of transforming our roads with electric vehicles.

New Terafactories

Due to a heavily automated manufacturing process, the cost of production will also be due to drop. Tesla is said to be planning on opening larger Terafactories, which will overtake their existing, and already enormous, Gigafactories. These factories will take over the production of their batteries. Where these factories will be built and exactly how large they will be, has not been stated yet, but Elon is sure to reveal this information alongside announcing the battery. CEO Elon Musk has also been hinting towards Tesla holding a battery day later on this month. This may the perfect time for the company to announce the new battery officially.

The "most exciting" day in Tesla's history will happen in May, chief executive Elon Musk said Wednesday.
