imo tho in the end its just a general label slapped on so that it might make a bit more sense to 'mainstream' audiences and also when it is brought up by the mainstream, they don't sound like niche nerds. Although I doubt that 'MOBA' or 'ARTS' or any other general genre name will mean anything to anyone anyways. (hows that for alliteration ^^)
MOBA/ARTS/Dota, does it really matter?

Going by that term games like starcraft, quake, cs etc. all fit the description perfectly. The term is just awful. Just call it Dota-Games. Its hard to describe the genre otherwise.

Call it whatever you'd like, chances are we know what you are talking about. Making these categories are suppose to ease people to get a quick sense of what the game is about. Now it's just getting ridiculous. MOBA is such a wide blanket, that if i didnt already know its linked to LoL, I wouldn't get a sense of what that game is. If we are relying on connotations to determine MOBA's meaning, then we might as well get the term Dota to have the connotations.

I hate AoS too, most people I see using it just went "oh, DotA was based on AoS, so let's call these games AoS". There is such a massive difference between AoS > DotA in comparison to DotA > LoL for example. ARTS if it catches on.

So basically, I don't really care. No current option really makes much more sense than the other, I just think people are sometimes too agressive about something that matters this little.

However I feel H(Hero)RTS or HARTS describes the game better because "Action" is involved with many games and doesn't really narrow the genre down to what its all about, Heroes. EDIT: To get in before "Champions! Villains! Fighters!" replies, I believe that even though LoL considers them champions and HoN/DoTA considers them Heroes, Heroes' is by far the better term and HARTS sounds better than CARTS

It's not really a type of game you can have too much variation within. Really, the furthest you can go is tweaking (ie true/false for things like denying); any other variation is just new heroes. I don't like MOBA at all, rejected it as soon as someone came up with it. I like ARTS better, but that still doesn't seem right to me because.. Action? That seems about the most useless, nondescriptive word.. If I had to come up with something better, it would have the word "hero" in it. Because that's a fundamental aspect of DotA games, whether you call them heroes or champions or whatever.
