Kirby, Nintendo's pink puffball and one of their most saccharine game franchises. It has often been joked that despite being an adorable cartoon spheroid who communicates like a teletubby, Kirby is something of a closet badass. "American cover art Kirby is badass" as the old meme goes, but given his truly absurd feats of power, endurance, and endless copy abilities, the more recent joke is that Kirby is some kind of nascent infantile elder thing that could possibly "grow up" and devour all of time and space...
...the funny thing is he quite could be, according to Nintendo themselves. Kirby has always had a dark streak in his games, especially when it came to final bosses such as Zero/02, but recent Kirby games have been kicking it up a notch. I came across an excellent video detailing the story revalations (yes, in a Kirby game) on Youtube. A lot of Lovecraftian elements are starting to emerge in Kirby: Ancient, long extinct civilizations with technology indistinguishable from magic. A cult dedicated to the worship and ressurection of a Dark God capable of destroying worlds. Mortal sacrifices, prophecies, and unsettling similiarities between cutesy hero and eldritch abomination.
So Kirby, fun games for little kids or Lovecraftian cosmic horror?
