It’s a surprisingly common misconception that everyday Danes doesn’t understand English.

Anyway, I often forget that Niels is a native Dane who is in fact an “illegal alien” in USA. It was rather interesting to make him speak Danish while sitting between Natalie and Duncan, because it’s a weird collision between his past in Denmark as the doctor’s son, and his new life in America as crime lord and killer.

I originally planned for him to talk with his mother for a lot longer, but it wouldn’t have been interesting for anybody. Boring for people who doesn’t understand Danish for obvious reasons, and boring for those who understand Danish because he isn’t saying anything of interest to anybody.

A translation of what Niels says to his mother:
Hi mom. How are you? Yes I’m sorry I didn’t call you yesterday, but I was busy. How’s dad? That’s nice. It’ll probably do him good to get out more. One would think he knew better. He is after all a doctor himself.
Listen mom, I’m talking with some friends right now, so how about I call you back later? Yes, it’s Duncan and Natalie.

I’ll talk to you later mom. Yes, I’ll ask her.
