Not a lot of people follow license changes but those who did switched to ViolentMonkey or used the 2.9 version as there was a github opened some time after TM went proprietary that hosts the source of that version.
Totally forgot that Violentmonkey exists.
I remember trying it out way-way back but it constantly gave me issues with userscripts not working or partially working so I switched to Tampermonkey.
ViolentMonkey is currently probably the best choice, but they do have in their privacy policy the following:
We may use Google Analytics to collect your browser information anonymously to help improve compatibility.
We do not disclose your personal data and extension data to any other third party
I had opened a Github request about it recently in hopes to get that changed, and it seems like the dev is considering removing it or making it an opt-out feature.
https://github.com/violentmonkey/violentmonkey/issues/602
So we'll see.
I know some malware likes to install Tampermonkey.
Probably to manipulate or capture what you go to better.
TIL. I’ll be switching to greasemonkey or something similar.
Switch to ViolentMonkey, it's under MIT license.
Edit: I just switched to GreaseMonkey because of you guys' comments, thanks! Interface is much better than that of ViolentMonkey
Thanks for the heads up. This is pretty big deal.
The Learn more
button on the banner explains it somewhat decently.
I was thinking most people know that! As a user and a developer, I have switched by violentmonkey, although I have to admit tampermonkey is easier for debugging the script. I actually love greasymonkey most but the author is too radical about the API. He has changed most API to asynchronous function, which makes it incompatible with out scripts.
I've already been using Greasemonkey after discovering the wonder that is Anti-adblock-killer,but thanks for the heads up. That really sucks
Anti-adblock-killer stopped to be awesome in 2016
Latest commit a87431f on Nov 21, 2016
Dammit. I used it because there was a Chrome and Edge version and it works everywhere, but I can't support that.
Is Greasemonkey still maintained?
It hasn't stopped being maintained. One of my first WebExtension add-ons.
I just know that some people don’t want to run non-free software
Oh, boy.
So are the Greasemonkey devs still refusing to add GM_download()?
So if you rename the xpi as a zip file you cannot see the source code?
Just because the code is readable doesn't meant it's under an open source license. If it's not, you aren't necessarily allowed to make changes to the code or share it.
OP probably meant “free and open source,” not just open source. Even though it’s source code is technically visible, it’s still nonfree software if it’s not properly licensed.
How is that not a GPL violation. If you modify GPLed code and distribute that code, shouldn't you have to release the source code of that as well?
If Tampermonkey accepted contributions to its source code and kept said contributions upon going proprietary, would that make them in violation of the GPL 3.0 license in relation to the contributors who didn't license the contributions permissively?
In my view, there are two main problems with closed-source software. Trust, and the inability to modify it.
With closed-source software, you have to trust that the software is doing what is claims to be doing, and isn't doing anything sneaky. That's a larger issue now than it used to be, as software generally has been tending to do more and more sneaky and objectionable things.
The inability to modify it means that you can't locate and fix bugs, you can't change any parts that aren't great for you, and you can't enhance the software.
That said, I am not adamantly opposed to closed-source software -- but if there's an OSS alternative, I'll take that every time.
The internet should collectively reject tracking. I don't mind ads. I mind tracking. A large amount of websites are unusable because of my tracking blockers. Let's all band together to reject tracking. There is nothing inherently wrong with advertising as long as the ad providers don't include tracking mechanisms.
Tracking has reshaped everything. Allow tracking? Your opinion can broadcasted to the world. Don't allow tracking? Your opinion is discarded before it leaves your network.
I use uBlock Origin, Violentmonkey and a few other extensions recommended by privacytools.io but I'd like to know what other things you guys find improve your browser experience.
My favourite additions are:
Reddit Enhancement Suite: Can't use reddit without it. Just makes the whole experience way way better.
Keepa: shows a price history graph on amazon product pages that lets you know if the "sale" prices are anywhere near worthwhile (spoiler: almost never worth it, sometimes the "sale" price is more than the 3 month average!)
Enhancer for YouTube: a load of extra features and tweaks that make YouTube much more convenient.
Pockettube: make groups/categories of YouTube subscriptions and be able to play new videos in a particular category.
Stylus: either re-style any website yourself or find a style that someone else has made for most major websites.
Shadowfox: full dark mode for firefox.
Are there any more you find useful or think I'm missing out on?
EDIT: These are great! Keep em coming! I might soon have the most bloated firefox install anyone's ever seen! Still using less RAM than a clean install of Chrome though!
https://imgur.com/a/xbunX2wWe get a lot of posts of Firefox market share dying with data from trackers.
Firefox blocks trackers by default.Wikipedia, one of top 10 sites says Firefox has had relative constant market share since 2017 when Quantum was released.
Currently Firefox is focused on 2 things: Android (where Fenix rocks) and diversifying revenue streams.
Firefox is far from dead. It's killing it on the devtools department, privacy, wasm and css performance.

We expect to start transferring the code from the production release of Firefox Preview to the Firefox for Android Beta channel during the week of February 17.
The beta updated on the March 2nd still uses Fennec. I would much like changing from Nightly to this more stable version (Fennec runs poorly on my device and isn't really an option).

Latest stable version. Installed addons: TreeStyleTabs, uBlock Origin.
