Huh, I wonder who taught millennials that going to college is the only way to get a good job? Could it have been the adults who said things like “study hard, you don’t want to be a plumber”?
Bingo. All of our parents demanded we go to college. No they wouldn’t help pay for it. Now those same boomers are bashing education as a tool of the left and unnecessary. Weird how they didn’t seem to think this way before Trump.
Edit: my FIL is a barber. He demanded both sons go to private school and college so they wouldn't grow up to be barbers. They had to help pay for their own private school education and then were completely on their own for paying for college. They both now have multiple degrees including advanced degrees and great jobs while FIL now asks Alexa questions like "How many people has Hillary Clinton had killed?" and loses his mind over trans anything, and bashes liberal everything. Gotta love that generation.
So what's the point of this? Higher education = bad? Philosophy = bad? Non-Anglo names = bad?
I guess your job is only meaningful if you work with your hands. Good thing grandma votes for the party that props up immoral white collar profiteers. They work so hard for their money.
These types of people hate any type of education that isn’t STEM or a skilled trade (i.e. anything that contributes to the capitalist labour machine). Which is weird because then they turn around and complain about American culture being destroyed or whatever.
Tiny nitpick to add on this: I'd argue Robert's four year apprenticeship counts as his education. So technically Phillipe could still think uneducated people are stupid without thinking Robert was stupid.
I’m a plumber in Texas, and it takes about 8 years to get a master license here. For now, we are one of the of the hardest states to get a master plumber’s license due to the hours we have to put in, as well as required classes, and some pretty intense testing to go from license to license. Even with all of this, people will still balk at having to “pay that much money to someone who doesn’t even have a college education.”
Sadly, many people still have this attitude, although it is getting better. We were told for decades that you go to college to be successful, and if you don’t, you’re a failure, or dumb, or somehow lesser. The problem is that when everybody is going to school for that business degree, they over saturate the market because we don’t need that many, and folks are coming out of college with 5-6 figures of debt, and now job opportunities. Meanwhile, the skilled trades were slowly dropping in numbers from year to year, and it is harder and harder to find competent workers. How much less debt might there be if those that didn’t enjoy school and only did it because it’s what you do, and instead had been taught that people like electricians, plumbers, mechanics, etc. are just as valuable and honorable professions as doctor, lawyer, or CEO. As another benefit, those that truly DO want to be a doctor, lawyer, or whatever, would also have less competition in their fields, and possibly have better chances of shedding their debt with a job that is actually available.
TL;DR Higher education is absolutely a positive thing, BUT it’s just not for everybody. The same can be said for the trades.
I think the philosophy major would have a better understanding of what it means to be a person than be an asshole who “looks down” on blue collar workers.
I work in the emergency electrical field and grossed $91,000 last year. That’s after over 20 years in the field though.
There are careers in the trades that offer good pay and benefits. There are college degrees that will offer very little to the person after college.
However the opposite is true for both as well. People can work themselves to death in the trades with no progression and of course there are many excellent career paths open only to those with the required degrees.
As always dividing people into “us and them” categories serves no purpose other than to make the person making the statement feel superior.

What's funny is that the left are trying to push free trade school in addition to free college. Turns out getting a fully paid apprenticeship isn't all that easy. And trade school costs money.
Why do conservatives think all college education revolves around philosophy, art, and gender studies? Very few college students actually major in those.
My dad thinks colleges brainwashed people into being liberals. I asked him to be more specific - like if you’re a business or engineering major, what specific courses are teaching them to be liberal... he beat around the bush and refused to answer the question
You know where I gotta go if I want to learn a trade? The local Community College, which means that "free college" would help people trying to work trades as well as people looking for non-trade careers.
I know this meme doesn't mention free education, but this argument gets brought up during that discussion constantly and it drives me nuts.
To be fair, the philosophy major is probably less vulnerable to dangerous propaganda from various authority figures that would want to keep the masses obedient, as they are used to thinking critically and skeptically about issues from different angles and perspectives.

But dont you know, if you make a mistake you deserve to be punished severely for it. Checkmate libtard

I think a good portion of these people don't even like STEM. Lots of anti-science sentiment among the conservatives these days.

Maybe, just maybe this is all a bunch of nonsense.

I wanna know what city/county Robert works for to get paid 80K a year to be a utility worker

In some cases trade schools cost more than college.
Very eloquently put.
Union gig in Milwaukee. My uncle used to clear six figures before he retired.

They actually think liberal arts colleges teach people to become liberals and do art
My dad thinks colleges brainwashed people into being liberals. I asked him to be more specific - like if you’re a business or engineering major, what specific courses are teaching them to be liberal... he beat around the bush and refused to answer the question
"Capitalism lets you achieve your dreams in a way no other system can."
"You majored in WHAT?"
“Socialism will make us slaves!”
“Why don’t you invest in something useful so you can contribute to society as a worker-drone?”
No disrespect meant to blue collar workers, but that’s the implication I’m getting.

I don't hate the uneducated, I hate the ignorant. The people who refuse to learn.
You can be uneducated and intelligent.
You can be highly educated and ignorant.
Education isn't a measure of intelligence. These days it's more a measure of wealth/how much debt you want to live in.
