BlazBlue Custom Color Creation Guide

Tools
Before we can start, you’ll need to download the following tools:
Hipster, found here[www.dropbox.com] HxDen, found here[download.cnet.com] Paint.net, found here[www.getpaint.net]
Once you have those, it's reccomended that you backup your Char folder, which will usually be located in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Blazblue Centralfiction\data\Char.
Making the Base for your Color
Before we can put a Custom Color in the game, we first need to create what our color will look like first. For this method, you’ll need Paint.net (if another tool works better for you, then feel free to use that. Just note that the base colors that are found below do not have color tables, which means you can't use Photoshop or GIMP's Color Table editors to edit those).
STEP 1 Open the Color Map for the desired character (you can get the Color Maps in each character’s section).
STEP 2 This is VERY important. Make sure you set the Flood Mode to Global & Tolerance to 0%!
What this does is allow us to select areas of the Color map for proper editing.
If the Flood Mode is set to Contiguous, every time you select something, It'll only select colors that are touching the area you selected.
And if the Tolerance is not set to 0%, colors similar to the selected color will also be selected. THIS WILL CAUSE A PROBLEM LATER WHEN EDITING THE COLORS.
STEP 3 Open up the reference image you'd like to base your Color off on. For this tutorial, we will be making a Naoto Color for Ragna.
STEP 4 Using the Color Picker Tool, Select the area containing the color you'd like to use in your edit.
STEP 5 After extracting a color to use, use Ctrl+Tab to change images (or move to the next image if you have multiple images) to the Color Map. Then use the Magic Wand tool to select the area you'd like to replace with the color you extracted from Step 4.
NOTE: If you do not wish to use Ctrl+Tab, you can expand the Canvas Size to fit all of your references on one sheet.
STEP 6 Once you selected the area you'd wish to change, hit the Backspace key & it'll fill the entire selected area with the extracted color.
STEP 7 Repeat Steps 4-6 until the Color looks as desired.
After that, Congratulations! You've made the color that you want to put in the game. However, we're not done yet. We only made what we want to color to look like, we haven’t actually put the color in the game yet.
Extracting an .hpl file
Now that you've done that, we will need to extract an .hpl file that will be used as a base for our Custom Color (.hpl is the file type that the game reads). Go to your Char folder and extract your desired character's char_XX_pal.pac file by and move it to your Hipster directory for convenience (Where XX is the abreviation of the character.) like so.
With that outta the way, now it's time to actually extract the .hpl file. Go to hipster, go to file, click explore and select the char_xx_pal.pac file previously selected. You will get something like this.
Here, select XX00_00.hpl (This is the default palette for your character.) right click it and select extract. Point your desired folder and that's it. Below is a gif of the process.
To replace your edited file, you have to open hipster, click explore, open your char_XX_pal.pac file, select the color you want to change, right click it and select replace. Select your edited .hpl file and click ok. A warning pops up, just click ok. (This information is also on the Hipster category, but it's also here for convenience.)
Now that you have your file, it's time to create out custom color.
HxDen
So, you've made it this far. This part is the hardest one, so to say, so I'll try to explain it as best as I can.
Step 1: With your color open in paint.net, if you show more of the color wheel, there’s a box that gives you the HEX value of the color. You can find the HEX Code right here
Step 2: Open HxDen and load up a hpl file. For this I'll use rg00_00.hpl.
When you look at the HxDen window, you will see a bunch of numbers on the left, and letters on the right. We will focus on the left side for this. As you know, color maps point out the line in which the colors are located. Now, you might say "I can't see how a bunch of numbers could be colors." And that's okay, but here I will explain everything.
The highlighted part is a color. According to the color map, that set of three numbers is the lightest shade of Ragna's skin. So, a set of three numbers equals to a color, right? Well, in between each set of three there is a FF value, here is what I mean:

There's a pattern, every three set of numbers comes an FF value which YOU SHOULD NOT CHANGE. These values change a color’s transparency, and we do not want that. With that out of the way, let's continue.
Step 4: Open the Color you made in Paint.net and select a color on the Color Square on the right using the Color Picker tool. Note: You don't have to change the green background.
Here you see I chose the lightest part of his skin, now you have to take the HEX code and reverse it, because for some reason BB palettes have codes in reverse order.
So if you were to paste the HEX code shown in the example above in HxDen, instead of writing this in HxD:

You’d want to write this:

It might take some time to learn and get used to it but it's all a matter of practice.
Step 5: Keep selecting and replacing each set until you finish.
Step 6: Click the save icon and name your file anything but make sure it ends with .hpl
And with that, you have successfully put your custom color into an .hpl file, so it’s now ready to be used in BBCF! But now the question remains, how do you put this file into the game?
Put the color into char_XX_pal.pac Hipster
This part is under the assumption that you aren’t using the BBCF Improvement Mod’s easy palette feature. If you are using that, then you can skip this part entirely and refer to the Improvement Mod’s readme file on how to implement your color. This part is only necessary if you want to manually put the color in the game’s files.
Step 1: Open Hipster, click File, then Explore. Step 2: Open your character’s char_XX_pal.pac file. Step 3: Right click the desired palette file you want to change, and click replace. Browse to your .hpl file and click open. Click Ok, and when asked to replace click Ok. (Keep in mind that xx00_00.hpl is palette 1, and xx01_00.hpl is palette 2 and so on. Also refer to the individual character sections on what each effect slot does) Step 4: Copy your new char_xx_pal.pac file and then navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\BlazBlue Centralfiction\Char and paste there. When asked to replace click Ok.
After that, you're done! Great job!

What I suggest for replacing effects is, make your custom palette and pick the effects of a palette that resembles your custom color's scheme. We have yet to figure out an efficient method to edit those files.

Hello, I know this thread is long since dead but I just wanted to try my luck and ask if there is any way to change the colors on the effects of some of Terumi's specials as well as the aura when he gains heat, since I edited XX.01 and it only changes some of them and I couldn't find anything in the other hpl files. Also wanted to say that I absolutely love this guide and appreciate all the work you put into it, making custom palettes has become one of my favorite hobbies. Thanks!
Yes i meant for example above Es and Susanoo the guide has details on what line is what part of their body (like line 20 being hair) etc, it would be great if Taokaka's section also had the details of what line contributes to what part of her, if it isn't possible it's ok the colors themselves are enough to figure out each part.
@Elfezen Unfortunately, everything listed under Taokaka's Color Guide is all of the customization points the game reads for her color scheme. I can't add any more customization points to her than the ones listed on her Color Guide.
Ok thanks, just one last thing if sometime you could also add the more detailed references for Taokaka's numbers because she is a popular character and a lot of people would benefit from this guide to costumize her into their own ''kaka'' characters.
