One distro more broken than another. If you dare to change something, everything falls appart. New ubuntu with gnome is a mess, sluggish, laggy, UI is optimized for elderly people. LTS has crashes, some software is broken to the point that it might as well be a random collection of bytes on the hdd. Fedora, apart from usual gnome bullshit and font rendering, is a challenge to get working smoothly (gpu drivers) and like OpenSUSE suffers from too much bloat. Debian works as long as you stick to the defaults, changing anything will result in a broken system. If you develop or compile software that requires new versions of libraries this is a problem, since versions in repos date back to 4000 BC. I don't know what to install anymore. Mainstream distros are like a voodoo magic ballanced inverted pendulum - a fart accross the room is enough for everything to collapse.

I tried it recently on a lark. It was fast, I'll give it that: definitely better performing than what I normally use. The app suite was decent. But I exploded it trying to add TUN/TAP support to the kernel, so I could run openvpn. And then I tried to find documentation, which does not really exist. I'm sure it was user error and to an extent, lack of knowledge.. but fuck that. Why wouldn't it support VPNs by default? Maybe I just missed a trick, but I shouldn't have to know a trick to be able to run openvpn.

I ended up back where I started: OpenBSD. It is very hard to beat once you are onto it. I also kinda like Open Indiana, it's pretty classy.

I..actually kinda like this, it's a sane gentoo install that does the minumum with some scripts and anything else I can just add myself. Any problems with emerge can be resolved by editing my make.conf to pull packages from Source Portage, and I can always switch back to Clover's mirror by simply adding '-G'.

Unironically the best. Before it, gentoo was the best by far. Now gentoo + a shitload of precompiled packages? You can't really do any better. Rock solid. Customizable completely. More stable than your horse's house. Nothing compares. Only complaint is that I've never gotten ANY gentoo-based liveusb to even boot, and cloveros is no exception. try sid

debian is not stable if you ever update anything to sid at any time, because half the system needs to be pulled into sid, and at this point everything explodes.
Meanwhile stable packages are chuckfull of bugs, but the bugs are never addressed which lets sysadmins add their custom patches and never bother changing them. That's what they really mean by "stable".

For me, mostly appreciation of the past and learning to use solaris. I'll never use it in production. That said, I have read that the solaris "zones" are very good. I also read that kernel performance is very good, comparatively, and can confirm anecdotally that my cpu utilization is lower on OI vs. obsd doing the same tasks (playing a movie, for example.)

Christian Gray
Christian Gray

It's not a very good comparison point since obsd is well known to be extremely slow and use shittons of cpu resources while no other OS has that problem. They claim it's security related but even with the same hardening techniques used in other OSs, they don't see such problems.

OpenSuSE used to be pretty good, but nowadays all the 3rd party repos are gone, there are fuckall packages in the main repos, it's unstable as shit, their patches introduce extra bugs while fixing nothing (used to be the exact opposite, the kde3 patch gave kde3 a searchable menu like modern accelerators such as krunner, and a really good interface, along with getting rid of many glitches and other bugs) and it uses systemd.

hi kevin. The only distro that doesn't constantly break, rolling release or not, is gentoo. Not to mention it's systemd free and has the second largest repo of any distro right behind aur, or that patching something is as simple as dropping a patch in a directory and reinstalling the package using the package manager, no need for any extra commands or indications or anything. Or USE flags. Or acutally good hardening.

You shouldn't use Debian Testing in a production/personal machine. Debian Testing doesn't get any security updates, and regular updates are usually delayed one week or so, so it stays vulnerable to all sorts of known security problems for about a week.
The purpose of Debian Testing... Is to test packages. Don't use it unless you want to help the Debian project. Debian Unstable and Debian Stable are the only things you should be using.
but I want a stable rolling release!
Not possible. The way packaging works in GNU/Linux means that you either have a unstable, regression-prone system (like Arch or Debian Unstable) or a stable, unchanging system (like Debian Stable or CentOS.)
Our best bet is for Snappy/Flatpak to catch on and be finished so we can have the latest packages in a stable base.

Stop being a lazy homo and install Gentoo without Clover.
Its CFLAGS are dangerous and largely unnecessary according to the Gentoo wiki.
They also seem to be arranged in a way as to "outsmart" package maintainers who override them which is the single biggest DO NOT DO in the whole article on optimizations.

Can we please just stop creating a billion fucking esoteric distros and then wonder why Linux isn't becoming a mainstream desktop operating system? If you want a desktop Linux distro chose from the main ones: Ubuntu, Debian, Arch, Fedora, OpenSUSE or Gentoo. Or build your own from scratch.

But, the way things are now, if someone new to Linux were to look up the best distro to download, he'd find hundreds of different answers. And if he were to post on a forum something like "Thinking about choosing this one. Any opinions?" he'd start a never-ending flame war. Do you think that encourages potential newcomers?

It's time to shut up, grow up and start improving existing open-source distros rather than forking them.

Yeah, sure, it's the people I know, it's not the fact that we have spent the past 3 decades building an amazing tool that makes the entirety of human knowledge available (and easily searchable) to everyone everywhere all the time for free, and everyone uses it for everything, including choosing their operating system.

Look m8, more users would benefit absolutely every single current Linux users out there. And if Linux went mainstream, then man, that would just be the best. Cause many of them to dual-boot Windows, because not many companies make software for Linux, and would really like not to have to.

But that's never going to happen if you can't control your addiction to forking every single project you see because you believe it can be improved in this tiny little way, and the current maintainers don't agree. And it's certainly not going to happen if you are then going to form a tribe around your favorite distro and declare war on everyone else.

"Windows sucks, but it's better than having to deal with this nonsense."

"But we don't want these kinds of people" I hear you say. Maybe not, but it's the kind of people you are going to fucking need if you want the Linux Desktop to have any amount of mainstream success. And if you don't then you are a disgrace to everyone you know and you fucking kill yourself.

Wrong. Proprietary is superior. Chrome is better than Firefox. Steam is better than GOG. Spotify is better than bittorrent. Gmail is better than Thunderbird. Discord is better than IRC. Goggle Docs is better than OpenOffice. Windows is better than Linux.

Chrome is better than Firefox.
That's been objectively wrong sine Quantum.

Google Docs is better than OpenOffice.
OpenOffice has been dead for the past 7 years, which just goes to show how familiar you are with FOSS. LibreOffice, it's successor, is better than Google Docs and almost on par with Microsoft's Office (the only things it's really missing in my experience are non-free fonts and table pivot in Calc).

Windows is better than Linux.
What? No. Just no. The only thing Linux is missing is software. Aside from that there is literally no reason to use Windows. It's objectively inferior in every way imaginable.

I'm not saying that some proprietary software isn't better than some free software. Adobe's stuff is a good example. IBM AIX too. But Windows is just utterly shit. Fucking crashes all the time. Unable to install itself in a partition without writing it's shitty bootloader that can't boot into any other OS to the MBR. Unstoppable updates. No Ctrl-Alt-F3 to get you out of a GUI freeze. Spies on you. No way to update all the software on your computer, need I go on?

And I know for a fact Android isn't better for me.

So it's easy to manage my 5 Gentoo boxes and install it on new boxes.

It might be the best distro for vidya because you can emerge any of these packages

gitgud.io/cloveros/cloveros/blob/master/binhost_settings/var/lib/portage/world#L175

You can just emerge rpcs3 to play ps3 games, emerge sdlmame to get the latest MAME version, emerge xonotic, and there's other games that are 1GB+ that you can get from CloverOS mirrors. I'm also working on including binaries of more games.

Funtoo is actually Gentoo plus a few features that I don't particularly use. I did like Calculate Linux at first, and I did learn from it. In the end, I decided to make a vanilla Gentoo image with a binhost configured in /etc/portage/make.conf.

I'll look into writing soon. chiru.no is mostly anime music because I collected a bunch of rare music first (I ended up making torrents and mirrored my collection to a couple people, so this worked out). I listen to other music, but I wasn't as concerned of putting them on my raidz. I'll add more non-anime music in time.

pls, don't compare cloveros to manjaro. even cloveros, a distro made by an user, is more professional than manjaro. manjaro is cancer. They """Forget""" to renew their ssl certs every year and all they do is that they make up a new excuse. manjaro ( at lest used to ) waits until packages from arch repos are """Stable enough""". in effect this mean that bugs don't get fixed. and don't even mention aur access. gentoo overlays are better in every way, aur is over-glorified dump of shell scripts and many of them aren't even maintained anymore. Also AUR isn't meant for people who are new to the GANOO system. If you use AUR, you should be able to read (and understand!!) the shell scripts, as they can execute ARBITRARY CODE. Now manjaro is cuck'd by Microsoft (they include MS office online in the installation now).

CloverOS is gentoo with default configs and binhost (you can disable it, if you really want to).

Steam is better than GOG
That's pretty niggerlicious.

you have to build cloveros like you would gentoo, right?
Yes but No. CloverOS has a binhost that holds some prebuild binary packages.
Installing gentoo takes a whole day, i would say (i installed gentoo on a computer with some inlel i5 and 8 GB of RAM). I once installed gentoo on my sub $300 laptop and it took nearly three days to get all my applications and openbox installed (i used ssh & tmux to install it so i didnt sit in front of the computer the whole time).
If you have multiple computers, then you can use distcc to compile faster.

I wanted to redo (most of) my configs as I used to use xfce. And, as I said, I didn't sit in front my computer the whole time. And I checked the price of my laptop and it didn't cost more than bit more than $200.
Or are you are referring to the time that it took for me to install it on my desktop? It was the first time I installed gentoo, so i had to read the docs.

is there an advantage to installing from source?
Yes,
1) The binaries will be optimized for Your hardware.
2) You can choose the options and features you want.

But I recommend that you install CloverOS. You can then remove the binhost and compile everything, if you really want to.

Caleb Lewis

Yes, you can compile against arbitrary library versions and add arbitrary patches. That's one big reason why gentoo is much more stable than any other OS.

On a 8 years old low-end laptop it took about half a day to install gentoo. Aside from firefox/qtwebenengine/chrome (I just use firefox-bin and such or it would take 12 hours extra) it takes about 3 hours to install on a 6th gen i5 with 16GB ram.

He said CloverOS is like Crunchbang. CloverOS is to Crunchbang as Gentoo is to Debian.

Now, think, what is the difference between Gentoo and Debian? That's right, they're both GNU\Linux distros, but they're two separate projects. Now that we've established that, what's the difference between Crunchbang and Debian? That's right, Crunchbang and Debian are both Debian distros, but the aim of Crunchbang is to be lightweight and preconfigured.

From that established knowledge, we can infer that was trying to convey that CloverOS is a project that contrasts Gentoo in that it's trying to be lightweight and preconfigured.

Excellent job, class! You used simple logic to comprehend what the other poster was saying rather than intentionally misconstruing what they had to say for the sake of being argumentative. Now it's time for snacks!

They also seem to be arranged in a way as to "outsmart" package maintainers who override them which is the single biggest DO NOT DO in the whole article on optimizations.
wat? It uses the gentoo way of setting those via make.conf and package.env.
Those are passed to gcc first so if a dev knows know bad compiler flags and defines them in his make/cmake script (-no-featurethatbreaksshit) those will be passed last and disable the make.conf/package.env flags.
Now I think that generally trying to use anything more than -O2 on a system wide basis and then just defining exceptions like clover OS does is a bit of a waste though. Just rice CFLAGS and test them well on programs where it would really make a difference.
And even then, there are devs that mainly use Windows and whatever shit Microsoft IDE available who just repeat decade old mystery tales about compiler optimization without ever having tested things, ie MAMEdev setting -O3 as the default optimization setting but recommeding against -march=native.

x86 is being tossed around, no idea if it will become a thing, since most of our computers use a architecture from at least the past 15 years. The driver situation is fine, my T410 has that shitty integrated nvidia gpu, but the open source driver works fine. There is the option to switch to the proprietary driver in the ./cloveros_settings.sh.

partition created by the system did not boot on a Dell r710

this would be excellent for an atom netbook, and I really like your script, but you should look at the debian installer to get a look at how automated script install should perform

I am not angry and I think all of the work you did so far is really good, but at the same time, documentation and more install options would be nice.

At the very least you should hold true to your memes and have an amd64, UEFI bootable version for server deployment, or mention somewhere that you're only supporting BIOSboot and x86 right now.

Best of luck on this project. I like your design philosophy and your work ethic.

Could easily do an overlay with all the patches but honestly its too much effort. You end up having to patch loads of other ebuilds to work around hardcoded crap. And some of the ebuilds are horrific; ffmpeg and anything to do with browsers outsource loads of stuff to eclasses and considering these are the types of things that will need patching it makes it a real pain in the dick.

The install (to be clear though, this was the version from earlier in March) came with circular dependencies - for git and perl. The latter is easy to fix (perl-cleaner) but I don't know how to resolve the ones for git. Help.

You obviously don't understand how it works, newfag.

The people that put distros together and maintain them are not the same people that write induvidual packages.

The the code that a developer releases for his program makes up the so called "upstream".
The upstream code is then compiled and packaged by the distro (downstream) maintainers.
The guys that do the real work are the upstream developers and they have nothing to do with induvidual distros.

It's not like all those countless distros are completely different operating systems written from scratch, where for each one you need to have a workforce equivalent to microsoft's pajeet army to write millions upon millions of lines of code.

One guy can make a distro from scratch pretty easily. All he needs to do is write a basic package manager, set up a repository and write a few install scripts, maybe include a few custom config files.

Forking a distro is trivial, mostly because you don't have to write a package manager from scratch.
What you'll probably want to do in this case is decide on which packages to pre-install, pre-configure them if needed and change some install scripts.

So it's not difficult to shit out a new distro, even a dumbass like you could do it.

CloverOS is the only distro able to support Raven Ridge CPU's out of the box. System booted from ancient kernel on liveCD (and worked), then rebooted into kernel 4.16.2 with working everything.

Note that if you build your own packages from the CloverOS base (which I do), the CFLAGS listed are too aggressive for gcc 7.3.0, which doesn't have proper (not buggy) Raven Ridge support yet. If things break (a52dec, timidity++, shit depending on qtcore, qtgui, qtmultimedia, or qtprintsupport). -O3 -pipe is the most reliable in these instances (-march=native sometimes causes issues - dbus refused to build).

CloverOS is a great distro on its own, but if you need to tweak, it's the best way to install Gentoo right now.

This is my 16th year using Gentoo. First time using CloverOS to install it. I'm a convert now. Really, the only rough edge is that I had to change package.keywords and package.use to directories, so I could separate the stock rice from my custom flags. A complete blue ribbon otherwise.

Then some faggot actually did it for him.

So I'll restate here:
CloverOS is a fantastic way to install gentoo. If you're installing it on a Ryzen 5 2400G, make sure to install the latest bios updates (made a huge difference in USB latency), and install gentoo-sources with USE="experimental" in order to enable -march=znver1 in make menuconfig.

Yeah but rarely, keep the screen clean and it isn't that much of an issue. I experience the pen mouse movements re-positioning into a random place sometimes, but that is fixed by moving the pen away, then moving it back into the area of detection. The biggest issue is when the pen is over one of the edges of the screen, and it doesn't position the mouse properly until I actually tap down on that area.
