Loved to watch Richard Holmes. He so convincingly put forward the message that one must walk the terrain to understand military history. My father, who as an officer had fought through WW2 and then turned academic, liked the below scene as it so elegantly conveyed believability.

I googled War Walks after reading the article and comments. Up until that moment I had never heard of Richard Holmes. I will watch the clips returned to me.

I once shared a stage with Richard Holmes. My talk was carefully scripted and (so I thought) pretty good. He followed me and seemed to ad lib the whole thing. No notes. It was sensational. I vowed that day never to read/lecture from a script again.

Superb historian who really managed to get the subject over to all. I loved his War Walks series and his books Tommy and Sahib are second to none. Greatly missed.

Many years ago I took the wife to see a re-enactment of the Battle of Cheriton (amazingly we're still married!) and Richard Holmes was doing a running commentary, describing everything in such detail and with a real passion. It was absolutely brilliant.

Much missed. How many historians could even shoot a Lee Enfield today... I wish more youngsters would fire one today - might understand what their forebears went through a little more....

Met Richard in Duke of York Barracks, London before he did a talk and was down in RY HQ going through it. Amazing guy who was absolutely enthusiastic about passing on the history of the British Army to all. A truly fascinating 10 minutes he spent talking to me.
Biking is even better, bc most b-fields are huge. Just pretend it's a horse. Wellington's position at Waterloo doesn't seem so elevated when viewed from the south; but u ride down from, u don't need to pedal, gravity hurles u from the ridge! 1/2
