Nothing compares to their first album. Brilliant pastiches of Beatles style. Let's Be Natural could easily have fitted on the white album.

Personally I think this man was right when he said they got it inevitably right with the Rutles #1 - and they should have called it quits after that.
Interesting point he's making about numbers and listing songs; wonder if this strange speaking guy was ever here on the forums...... (never know). Enjoy

nice sleeve too .... that #1

Said it before ... will do again: this should have been on the Steve Hoffman homepage on January 11.

Didn't this album and the Monkees Justus come out at the same time?

About 10 years ago I went to a Rutles gig, and I was talking to Neil Innes afterwards (what a nice guy!), and I was asking him about the Rutles Archeology album, and how it came about.

He said that he' been wanting to do more Rutles stuff for a long time but that it didn't feel right after John died. Anyway, he told me that he phoned George Harrison around the time of the Beatles Anthology, and told him he thought the time might be right to do something new with The Rutles, and did George have any objections. George said no problem at all. When Neil said he would go ahead then, George jokingly replied "You realise one of you will get shot now?" :yikes:

So many good songs off Archaeology, a couple that come to mind,

    Shangri La
Major Happys, Up and Coming, Once Upon A Good Time Band

Both albums were sheer genius in my book.

The sequel movie blew fetid chunks:hurl:

I didn't know it had come out in 1996. I stumbled on it that year, I think. I bought it, but thought it was ok. But the older I got, the more I appreciated it and now I really love it.

I loved the first album (especially on CD), and was surprised at how good the 1996 album was. I love them both.

"The Rutles 2" is even more shameful when you realize Eric Idle probably ONLY did it as a big slap in the face to Neil Innes.

The 2nd Rutles movie is worth it for the Bowie bits (which I think you can watch seperately as a bonus on the DVD).

The 2nd Rutles LP is great!

I saw Neil Innes & John Halsley's Rutles a couple of years ago and they were awesome. I met them afterwards too, they were both really nice.

It's a stronger album than The Rutles. The debut was all over the stylistic map, but in Archaeology Innes mostly concentrates on psychedelia that's closer to his own work with the Bonzos, and he isn't afraid to get serious in his lyrics. "I Don't Know Why" is a much more effective summation of the Beatles' legacy than "Free as a Bird," the song it's ostensibly parodying.

It's all over the map because it was about their entire career which The Beatles were also all over the map. It's not something that could be held against it critically.

Yes something was definitely off there as both the Shangri-La video and the Archaeology songs were not on the sequel from my recollection. Innes was creating great stuff, Idle was scrapping the barrel.

The Archaeology songs were in it..... which was incredibly bizarre, considering Eric refused to do that album, and hated everyone he knew that was involved in it.

Maybe I was just thinking of the Shangri-La video, which would have been a natural for that sequel even without Eric in the clip. Geez I really don't want to sit through it again to hear the later songs...

The shameless part was Eric dubbing Archaeology songs over old footage - like, "Easy Listening" poorly slapped over the "Living In Hope" footage.

What is the beef between Idle & Innes?

Long story short, Eric Idle believes he more or less single-handedly created the Rutles, even though he didn't, and Innes's contribution was actually exponentially greater than Idle's.

Along with a lot of petty crap he's supposedly done like refusing to let Dirk's face be shown anywhere on the Archaeology artwork. I think he also had a major hand in the Archaeology getting little to no promotion, as well.

    What a coincidence.
The real people behind the fictitious band (Rutles) are fighting amongst themselves.
Just like the real people behind the real band they were lampooning (The Beatles) were fighting amongst themselves.
