Hi guys,
Seems like the European mirrors are extremely slow the whole day today.
Is anyone else experiencing it ?
http://alpha.de.repo.voidlinux.org (EU: Germany)
http://beta.de.repo.voidlinux.org (EU: Germany)
Both are going at ~10KB/s speed at least for some 8 hours.
If you're experiencing multiple slow mirrors then the issue is probably on the network layer. You can confirm this by running a traceroute to each repo endpoint that you're trying to pull from and compare the outputs for any noticeable latency.
P.S. The American ones are going slightly better at ~250-300KB/s. Still really slow though compared to the usual speed of 2-3MB/s on a 100Mbit connection.
I can download with full 100Mbit from beta.de. I have not tested alpha.de
Yep looks like it was my provider. Back to ~3-5MB/s. The latency was OK at that time ~50ms I guess it was their international traffic.
Thanks for reporting.
Marking as Solved!
So I've been running Void for about 3 days and wanted to jump in here and share some thoughts from a new user.
I've been thinking about trying out the distro for about two years or so (thank/blame a Luke Smith video) and finally decided to give it a shot and I love it. While I've been using Linux since about 2003/2004 (Red Hat 9 was my first distro), and I do consider myself an advanced user, I always like to set up a system that just works once I set it up exactly like I want. As a result, I've been using Arch and Endeavour mostly lately but I will say I'm digging Void even more. I don't care for the whole systemd/no systemd argument, but runit really is a fantastic option. My main reason for the switch was actually xbps which I think is superior in many ways to pacman (I'm sure some will disagree), and while the AUR is fantastic, there are possible security concerns (don't @ me).
I have had zero issues getting any software I use, zero issues with hardware compatibility, and the system has been stable and solid. I included a screenshot of CPU usage which may seem a little high for some of you running lighter DEs but note that I run all my Firefox tabs in containers so I'd say that's a definite win from other distros I've used (i moved those tabs to windows for this screenshot only). On boot, my Void install with Plasma runs a smooth 300-400MB RAM usage.
In fact, I love the minimalism and stability so much, I plan on replacing the Arch install on my laptop with Void, as well as my kids' machines (which both run KDE Neon) with Void as well...hell, after some Docker and Podman testing I may throw it on my Pi as well.
Anyway, just wanted to share some thoughts, and send a huge thanks to everyone involved for making this such a pleasure to use. After all these years of distro hopping, i feel like maybe I have found a permanent home.
https://i.redd.it/60q1upw8j5d41.pngI'm moving from Arch to Void - and staying if I find it has the packages I need in recent enough versions. What are your recommendations for linux-hardened kernel on Void? Other system hardening recommendations welcome.
With native encryption now part of ZFS On Linux, mobile users have more choices. I've written a bare-bones guide to installing Void on ZFS with full disk encryption and the bootloader (rEFInd loading ZFSBootMenu) on a USB drive. ZFSBootMenu continues the boot process after importing and unlocking your ZFS pool.
The directions can be lightly modified to put the EFI partition on the ZFS pool drive. The tradeoff is a bit more convenience for a small attack vector (evil maid attack). If there's interest in this, I can outline the modifications.
A big thanks to /u/DNiceM for proofing the directions and identifying a few problems.
greetings everyone, i'm looking forward to switch from arch to void, leaving the aur really hurts me, but this is a challenge i'm looking forward to accomplish.i was just checking a few of the packages i use on a daily basis and i found out that vscodium or just codium is not present on the void packages.i was wondering if perhaps i must use the xbsp-src
command? (again, I haven't switched yet and really haven't needed to build from src as I've had the aur).
links of the package i'm referring:
vscodium's github ||| official vscodium website
appreciate the help.
Whenever I open my laptop (Thinkpad X200), it wakes up momentarily before falling back asleep. I then have to hit the power button to wake it back up.
I haven't done much power management configuration - I've only installed TLP and started the acpid and tlp services. For now, my battery runs out quickly, but that's more a sign that I need to get a new one than that I need to fiddle with TLP.
Is anyone else having similar issues?
Here are some things I'm investigating when considering switching to void:
Void vs NixOS: configuration management:
-- Can be done using Darch in Void
Void vs QubesOS: Hardening
-- Qubes has more kernel hardening
-- Using Firejail for programs like browsers covers most needs
-- QubesOS potentially overkill
-- Can use linux-hardened in Void
Arch vs Void: More Up-to-date
-- Arch: has some more recent packages I need (like Docker)
-- Void: I could just build those few packages I need myself
Thoughts on getting the best of all worlds on Void?
I have a Dell Inspiron 5577 and have just installed Void Linux. I installed the complete `xorg` metapackage because I just wanted it to auto detect everything and not have to worry about figuring out which driver I had to use. Everything seemed to be working fine but the touchpad doesn't work at all. Xorg recognizes that I have a "ETPS/2 Elantech Touchpad" and it even says that it is going to load the module `synaptics`, which to me seems like it is going to use `xf86-input-synaptics` driver to handle it. But it does not work at all. Not even the buttons. Could you help me? I'm not sure which information I need to provide, so I'll edit the post with the information required.
Yesterday, I've updated a bunch of packages including tar
. At the same time, tar was running. Don't know what is happening, but the tar
binary is missing.
Tried to reinstall the package, the installation seems fine, but no binary is installed.

Hi,
This week I stumbled onto something that made me reconsider my choice for void.
Last Wednesday (jan 29) I opened up freecad for the first time since a few months and I noticed that when I tried to draw a line, the redraw of the line lagged for like almost a whole second behind the cursor. Even autoc*d 11 on dos back in the day was not this slow. I must note that the opengl redraw of the 3d model was not impacted. The most annoying thing was that I got no message, no error, no log entry to point me towards faulty or mismatched libraries.
I tested this behavior on windows and it was not present there. Also, all of my freecad versions where impacted, the repo one, my self compiled one and the AppImages provided by the freecad team. At this point I had to deduce that it would probably not be my GPU drivers (3d redraw was fine), not the Freecad build (all builds and versions are impacted) and not the Coin3d libraries (I have versions that use different coin3d versions, and yes they are separated from each other) .
Miffed, I finished my work in windows and today I booted back into void to use blender.
Then, today, I updated the repo and the packages like I do every other day or so and I noticed the mesa packages getting updated.
I thought that maybe -just maybe- this could fix the draw issue and yes it did. I think. I mean, the issue is solved now and I suspect that the mesa lib update was the answer, but I cannot be sure.
So, my question is, what has happened here ? Does it look like the mesa update solved the line drawing issue ? What would need to be faulty with mesa for this behavior to occur ?
And finally the biggest question of all, is it safe/sane for me to continue Void in a production setting ?
I have accepted for now that building blender on void with cuda support is impossible, cuda dictates a specific gcc version and blender dictates a specific cuda version and these constraints do not mesh well with a rolling release distro. Luckily, the blender foundation's binaries have proven to be very reliable. Also, I must admit to myself that not being able to set up a build system for my entire software constellation is maybe a blessing in disguise. (nb I need Blender, Freecad, Scribus, IfcOpenshell, Opencascade and pythonocc )
I would love to hear your experiences and insights.
Thank you,
S
I have some kind of vague idea for a "rescue" image, that would be little more than a command line environment firmware and drivers for a large range of network devices, some disk tools and xbps and little else
Ideally this should be very small and also be installable inside an EFI folder (so super compressed and tiny /boot/ and root disk image - probably mounted in ram ?)
so as long as a boot loader is working (be it rEFInd or grub) there are always some kind of boot-able environment you can use to rescue or even install void onto a partition.
What would the pro's and con's of this idea is it even practical or would it even be that useful ?
Is Voidlinux actively being patched for all these side channel exploits as i didn't notice anything in the bootup about microcodes being added?
Since spectre meltdown hardly a week passes without a new intel exploit and there is now a iGPU leak.
i can't see some chars like 💙.
Anywho have some idea what missing package could fix this ?
this only appears like a square for me.
I'm settung up an USB Memory Stick with voidlinux on a headless Raspberry Pi 3 B.
Voidlinux is based on a 64bit void-rpi3-musl-PLATFORMFS-20191109.tar.xz with a followed xbps-install -Su
Runs fatastc stable and super fast. It's fun.
But I can't get bluetooth and sound to work
So, let us look only into bluetooth first.
What I did:
I installed: bluez bluez-alsa libbluetooth
linked bluetoothd bluez-alsa to /var/servic and checked that they are running
related modules bluetooth rfkill are loaded
Output of dmesg |grep Blue
[ 13.756797] Bluetooth: Core ver 2.22
[ 13.756940] Bluetooth: HCI device and connection manager initialized
[ 13.756974] Bluetooth: HCI socket layer initialized
[ 13.756996] Bluetooth: L2CAP socket layer initialized
[ 13.757078] Bluetooth: SCO socket layer initialized
[ 13.829510] Bluetooth: BNEP (Ethernet Emulation) ver 1.3
[ 13.829527] Bluetooth: BNEP filters: protocol multicast
[ 13.829562] Bluetooth: BNEP socket layer initialized
But: "bluetoothctl show" says "No default controller available". rfkill no mentions bluetooth at all. hcitool finds no devices.
Am I missing something?
P.S.: bluetooth on the PC with current voidlinux works perfectly
Thank you for your attention, Nunito
Since some time, I am experiencing an issue where I am not able to login as the main user of my machine; the only way to use it was by logging in as root and using su, when it worked properly.
Whenever I try to login I give my username and password and I get a message *Login Incorrect".
I tried changing some options in passwd
and usermod
but to no avail.
Interestingly when I remove the password from the user, if I enter the user's username it does not ask for a password but directly displays Login Incorrect.
Making a new user works properly, and I have tried comparing the passwd and shadow entries of the users but with no visible issue.
Trying to install a display manger, they also fail to login as the user.
I believe that the issue is in login
and hence in pam
but I do not know why only the particular user is affected
so i have just done a install on bare metal for the first time all seems and goes well until i go login to my user, after i put the password in it spits out the error of : -- dylan: no shell: permisson denied. What could i have messed up? I just did a reinstall and it didnt work either ive never had this issue in a vm.
I'd like to remove the installed python
(python2.7) package, but the xfce4
meta package depends on it in many ways.
Is anyone already working on it? If not, I'd like to give it a shot.
My goal: Enable/use usb audio when docked, enable internal sound when not docked.
but ...
So I have the following settings for alsa with the listed hardware:
T495 with USB-C Dock, Sharkoon Gaming DAC Pro S (USB audio)
The settings below only let me have test sound for internal speakers and headphones.
Changing 1 to 3 in ~/.asoundrc gives me test sound on headphones connectect to dock.
Changing to 2 gives me errors:

greetings, i'm trying to install void on vbox first instead real hardware. i'm aiming for a minimal experience so i grabbed the lxde iso. first problem i encountered was that network/online installer is broken, i tried many times and also with another flavor without luck, every time the installation was finished whenever i tried to log in with my user (via tty because i never went thru login manager) i got this error: no shell: permission denied
.
after many attempts, i tried switching to local which indeed got the shell
problem fixed and also booted in lightdm
if i'm not mistaking the LM, first thing i tried doing was updating the system, but then i got this error.
i was able to install neofetch
but later on tried git
but i'm just unable to with this error.
i don't know if i'm doing something clumsy, been reading the handbook, but seems weird to me not being able to use the network install in the first place.
edit: i also don't know if this is normal, but the installation was just (too fast?) i've never seen an installer this fast, and i've distrohopped a lot.. (not saying this is related to the issue) i'm just surprised with the speed of it.
edit 2: i also wanted to share my vbox settings (i've tried vanilla linux and now red-hat).
edit 3: digging here i also found a user here having this issue, he's also having this problem attempting to use network install instead of local.
I'd appreciate any tips to get this scanner working.
I've installed the following....
libsane
sane
sane-epkowa
xsane
lsusb
produces...
Bus 002 Device 009: ID 04b8:013d Seiko Epson Corp. Epson Perfection V39
ls -l /dev/bus/usb/002/009 produces...
crwxrwsrwx 1 root scanner 189, 136 Jan 29 15:51 /dev/bus/usb/002/009
I'm a member of the scanner group.
scanimage -L
produces...
device `epkowa:usb:002:009' is a Epson (unknown model) flatbed scanner
And that's as far as I ever get.
Xsane starts, I select the scanner in the dialog, and then it freezes.
I've also tried iscan and no luck.
Only thing I've had luck with is VueScan, but I can't justify paying for it.
What pkgs do i need for gaming, lutris / steam proton on a gtx 760
The following message was appearing during boot:
kfd kfd: kgd2kfd_probe failed
It seems to refer to the amdkfd module, which is used for DRM. I tried to blacklist it under /etc/modprobe.d, but it persisted on loading. I guessed that another module could be using it, so I checked it with lsmod.
$ lsmod | grep kfd
amdkfd 126976 1
amd_iommu_v2 20480 1 amdkfd
Blocking that last module had no effect either. My second attempt was to block all modules which appeared to be related to DRM, where all the ones listed below were blacklisted, however these modules also kept on being loaded.
$ lsmod | grep drm
drm_kms_helper 167936 2 amdgpu,radeon
syscopyarea 16384 1 drm_kms_helper
sysfillrect 16384 1 drm_kms_helper
sysimgblt 16384 1 drm_kms_helper
fb_sys_fops 16384 1 drm_kms_helper
drm 393216 9 drm_kms_helper,amdgpu,radeon,ttm
agpgart 40960 2 ttm,drm
I also wasn't able to remove the amdkfd module while the system was up, having modprobe warn that it is being used.
Any tips on removing that message and the DRM related modules as whell? I'm on kernel 4.14.167 btw.
Hello everyone, I was just wondering if it is possible to run a graphical program in a chroot? I need to use a program that I can't get working on void linux and I was wondering if I was able to do a chroot into another distro and run that program in there.
installed latest iso(xfce) but no audio output. alsa-info.sh output system is update.user is member of audio group.have no config file like ~/.asoundrc
UPDATE: ok.it was my niece fault.she confessed and said "i broke the laptop" so it's not voidlinux fault.i'm so sorry for wasting your time.have fun and be nice to your nieces :)
