Chicago used algorithmic risk scores to run a program literally called “TRAP,” which targetted people for “enhanced prosecution" if police thought they had “propensity” for future crime

Arrests for minor traffic offenses including speeding (which can be some of the most discriminatory and arbitrary forms of policing) could raise your propensity “score” and lead police to target you again

Even arrests thrown out in court or charges you're acquitted of could increase your propensity “score.” In other words, police run arrest people on racist/arbitrary whims, and then those arrests become “data” showing you should be targeted again.

As we see with pretrial risk assessments and other racist/arbitrary predictive tools, Chicago claimed it was trying to predict safety needs (identifying who might get shot). The reality is they were policing "propensity" for crime.

Any police officer was free to access these bogus “risk” scores for any reason. CPD also promised they didn’t share the information externally, but that was a lie.

These tools are spreading quickly. Trying to merely regulate or limit them is useless their whole premise is racist, oppressive, and illegal. We need to abolish algorithmic surveillance, abolish policing of association, and abolish demographic policing.

Maybe someone else has a different view of this, but big data or even just data analysis tends to break down at the extreme edges of the curve. Criminal behavior is definitely at the edge. They call it “random error” for a reason and the 3 percent at the end is usually random

Reading the doc specifics on how it adds points you have to love the way they charge 80 points for being the VICTIM of aggravated assault. Seriously WTF?
