Shoes on shoes off

We don't usually think of Scandinavia as "shoes off" countries, but then I talked to some Americans who couldn't understand why their Scandinavian friends were always hovering around in the entrance if they only visited to pick something up real quick. The mystery was solved when they explained that it's impolite to walk around people's houses with shoes on in Scandinavia. You either take them off or at least ask if you should. Even if the homeowner don't expect you to take your shoes off they might still get offended if you don't ask, so the rules are a bit more complicated than in Japan.

I always remove my shoes when I come inside.

Then again, I'm way off in Massachussetts and I don't have to deal with any poisonous insects hanging out inside my house.

Who doesn't take their shoes off?? If you don't you're just dragging dirt and mud all throughout the house.

Honestly here in Canada we take our shoes off. I always thought it was so weird to see TV shows where every one just walks about in thier shoes after coming inside. I was like they must have to sweep and mop thier floors every single day and the laundry must be insane because they would sit with thier feet on thier furniture and muddy shoes. It was a bit insane to me. Not sure if all of Canada does this but here on the east coast especially in Winter and Spring...take off your shoes.

Anyone wondering why much of America leaves shoes ON in the house has never stepped on a sandspur. (native to much of the American south) Its a little seed with nasty hooked barbs that HURT when you step on them and are pretty bad to pull off as well. No matter how careful you are, they always cling to clothes and scatter on the floor. My sneakers would have so many sandspurs they looked like spiked shoes! Of course, I didn't mind because every one in my sneaker wasn't in my foot!

The main reason I wear shoes inside is for their +5 Defense vs Lego.

Here in Germany it's also expected that you take your shoes off at the door. The problem is that apartments always have these terrible floor plans in which the front door opens into a long hallway that is always too narrow for even a small bench or chair, so everyone awkwardly fumbles around standing on one foot trying to remove their shoes. I really hate it.

Is it a feature of american homes to have a front door that opens directly into the livingroom or is that just a movie/TV-set builder thing?
Were do you hang your coat? You must have a selection of them and a selection of shoes depending on weather.

I think in most European countries you take your shoes off. I mean, can't understand for the life of me why you want to keep them on in the house since:
1. Even the comfies of shoes are still not as comforable was walking bare foot.(Or flip flops if its really cold)
2. Its very inhygienic to walk in lets say the kitchen or hop on the bed with the shoes you had been outside with.
3. You have to clean the floor and especially the rugs more often.

In Belgium the rules are a bit weird too, like in their own home most people take their shoes off. But you don't always take your shoes off if you're invited to someone else home. In fact mostly you don't (unless they're very muddy or something)
