Asked in The Book of Mormon
What does the word Deseret have to do with the Mormon religion?
The word Deseret is found in the Book of Mormon and supposedly
means Honeybee. Early Mormons adopted this word and the symbol of
the beehive to represent their industriousness - they were busy,
hardworking, and highly organized, just like bees. The Deseret title
can still be found on many things related to or owned by the church
such as Deseret News (a Mormon-owned newspaper), Deseret Industries
(a Mormon owned thrift store), and Deseret Book (a Mormon book
store).

Asked in Mormonism, Safeway
Does a Mormon own Safeway Stores?
No. Safeway Stores came from a merger between Skaggs Stores in
Idaho and Seelig Stores in California. The founder of the Skaggs
Stores, Samuel Milton Skaggs, was a Baptist minister. The founder
of Seelig Stores, Samuel Seelig, was the son of Russian Jewish
immigrants and there is no mention of him converting to become a
member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (commonly
called the "Mormon" church). As he lived in California at a time
when the majority of Mormons were in Utah, it is quite
unlikely.
Currently, Safeway is a publically traded company and is
therefore owned by stockholders, not an individual. The Mormon
Church does not have stock in Safeway. The current CEO, Steven
Burd, is said to be a Born-Again Christian.

Do Mormon businesses support the Mormon community?
Businesses owned by members of the Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter-day Saints (the "Mormon" church) financially support the
owners and their families. Most Mormons choose to pay a tithe to
the Church, which is 10% of their income. In that way, some profits
of Mormon-owned businesses support the Church.

community. These include things like modest clothing shops,
food-storage and emergency prepardeness supplies, and religious
books and music with Mormon themes. Check out the "related links"
below for examples of Mormon-owned businesses that cater to the
Mormon community.
The Mormon Church itself doesn't really own any for-profit
businesses, except for a few restaurants in Salt Lake City and a
local newsmedia outlet. Most of their for-profit ventures are in
real estate.
