Why did Syrians celebrate Soleimani's assassination? I interviewed some of his victims, whose voices have largely been ignored in the heated debate following the U.S. strike

  2. Ahrar al-Sharqiya took over the base of Division 20 in Mabrouka, Hassakeh. Due to tribal ties between some of the fighters & imbalance of power, fighters in Hassakeh defected from Division 20. Convoys of Ahrar attackers passed unhindered through Turkish checkpoints.

517 individuals including 371 children have died in Hol Camp in 2019 - primarily those who arrived with severe malnutrition, plus diarrhoea with dehydration and pneumonia. At 18.75 per 1000 residents, the camp has a worse mortality rate than any nation-state in the world.

  4. Ahrar al-Sharqiya has also overrun the HQ of Division 20 in Suluk, Raqqa. Division 20 was established in 2018 with Turkish support by fighters who were defeated by ISIS in Deir Ezzor, fled to the Qalamoon Mountains, then were defeated by the regime & bussed to northern Syria.

  5. Protest today in Sweidaa, southern Syria, against living conditions as the prices of basic goods skyrocket. One man chants "we want to call for freedom" & the rest interrupt him. Protesters don't want to be seen as political. They just want to be able to feed their families.

Three interlocking shifts in Lebanon: protests turn to rioting for lack of any response in months; the mobilization encompasses activists and the sectarian thugs who would previously beat them up; and the police is now repressing blindly, via sweeping arrests often without basis
