His failure was stating "Assad must go" w/out the will to make it happen. He thought he could win with half measures, but they failed and contributed to .5 million dead. He should have worked with our allies AND adversaries towards a peaceful resolution before the war started.

Surely the most important thing about civil waste is that they finish quickly and decisively.

A regime battlefield victory does not end a civil war quickly, however. For example: the taking of Baba Amr in Homs in March 2012 was a pretty decisive Syrian regime conventional victory, & the rebels just regrouped. Also see battle of Zawiya in 2011 Libyan war, pre-intervention

Except for Alawite and Christian Syrians. It would have been more of a genocide than a Godsend.

In 2014 if a larger superpower invaded America, funded armed rebels and liberate Americans from Obama. Many Americans would cheer for it. But a lot of Americans to die in the civil war. Not all Syrians are FSA, Ahrar Al Sham and HTS supporters.

It would also have been much better for the West. Obama's policies led to genocide-like massacres, millions of refugees, a 4-year US military intervention, Iran taking over the government in Damascus and Russia entrenching itself in the Middle East. Could it be any worse?
