magnetic appeal

Don't be scared by the references to this being a Magnetic Fields "country" album. Not at all. It's only "country" in the sense that the music evokes rural highways and wide open places. Other than that, you aren't going to find any banjos, peddle steel guitar or hillbilly yodeling ... so relax. But once again, Stephin Merritt displays his knack for composing crafty songs with hooks and subtle layers of melody. Like previous Magnetic Fields albums, the more you play it, the better it all sounds. Addictive tunes once again. I honestly can't say it's my favorite of the MF albums that I've heard so far, but there is no denying that it's a mighty good one. Magnetic Fields fans need to have this one in their collection.

I'm relatively new to the Magnetic Fields: I picked up their new CD Distortion about a month ago and was impressed. Then I ordered 7 other Magnetic Fields CD's and I was a little taken aback. They didn't have the almost Jesus and Mary Chain noise of Distortion. But soon I adjusted to the quirky pop sound of the Magnetic Fields and this CD quickly became my favorite. The Amazon reviewer is an idiot: "But much of this particular stretch of the Fields is lacking in charm, since Merritt's wry stance chafes a bit too hard against the guileless melodies." It a very quirky country sound, full of longing and ache and wry melancholy, and the CD is held together very tightly by the controlling metaphor of the road. I buy tons of CD's and this one is going to be one of my favorite purchases of 2008. I'm wondering how I've missed listening the the Magnetic Fields for all these years!

An Underappreciated Gem and Dark Horse Candidate for the Magnetic Fields' Strongest Album

"69 Love Songs" gets all the attention, but for my money "Charm of the Highway Strip" is the Magnetic Fields' tightest, strongest album. Stephin Merritt's songwriting is in peak form here (and when Merritt's in peak form you ought to be listening) and as strange as this might be to say about a synth-pop country road album with a bit of a vampire fascination, he plays it fairly straight -- "Charm of the Highway Strip" is possessed of a thematic unity and consistency of quality that the eclectic "69 Love Songs", for all its brilliant moments, never even attempts. They're different beasts, and each a remarkable accomplishment in their own way. Standout tracks on "Charm.." include the opener "Lonely Highway", "Long Vermont Roads", and "When the Open Road is Closing In" but unlike later Magnetic Fields efforts this album is largely top-notch material and no filler -- the flip side being that it clocks in at a relatively short running time -- but that's not a crisis because when you get to the end you'll want to listen again.
