before AngelList, angel investors were undercover and there was almost no way to connect with them outside of a warm intro from someone who had taken money from them.

For angel investors, the valuation difference between investing before you launch your product & after you launch is 0-50% typically (say $3m pre and $4m post). That's why waiting is almost always their best move.

Having a chart at the top of your email to an investor with your current traction, & then a second chart with the "path to $50m in revenue" a page down in your email is a game-changer, because you will stand out vs the 90% of founders pitching soft metrics.

The best time to approach investors is when you have modest traction. It's VERY helpful if you can control the traction by spending money i.e., if you were running a meditation app and said "We spent $10 to acquire users & every 5th one converts to $100 a year paid"

the number of times your investments go to zero is meaningless to angel investors---even if they don't act that way. i.e. --- $100,000 in 100 startups = $10M --- 99 die, $9.9M in losses --- 1 investment becomes a unicorn and you make 200x your money = $20m

In order to raise an angel round plan on building a target list of 200+ investors, in order to convert 20% into 40 meetings --- then get 20% to a second meeting (8). That might get you 1-3 term sheets or lead. Then you go back to everyone who said "who is your lead?"

Conferences used to charge upwards of $20,000 for startups to demo their products on stage for five minutes.
