    Iraqi Prime Minister doesn’t condemn the Iranian missile attack against Iraqi bases that host US forces (the soft way the statement reads feels like it even is kinda welcoming it). When Iraqi government itself doesn’t take its sovereignty seriously, why should anyone else?

    Iran-backed groups been targeting Ain Assad base for months but Iran decision to attack Erbil is new and dangerous; the attack looks like a warning and shows Iran is unhappy with KRG stance, so more but anonymous attacks against KRG may come if they continue being unhappy w KRG.

    Iraqi army statement says no Iraqi casualties in last night’s missile attacks in which 17 missiles landed near the Ain Asad base in west Iraq and five rockets landed near a US base in Erbil. However, the statement doesn’t mention that the attacks were Iranian.

    This doesn’t yet feel like a major escalation. The US military was anticipating an attack and personnel had taken cover. Iran can claim it took revenge. Feels more like an escalation to deescalate.

    Note: next to Erbil international airport, there is a US force stationed in Erbil’s old airport. So all the three targets in Erbil are American sites, two are US bases, the third is US consulate. No damages reported in any of them.

    A source close to KRG PM confirms rockets targeted American consulate and Erbil airport but they have all been thwarted, no damage reported:

    Few rockets have landed in Erbil tonight. No impact reported inside airport compound or on US consulate general.
