‘Samurai Shodown’ on Nintendo Switch Finally Gets Western Release Date

  • Releasing on February 25th.
  • Pre-orders come with a Neo Geo classic from the series.
  • Digitally download file size is 9.4 GB.

It was back in August when we first saw footage of Samurai Shodown running on the Nintendo Switch. Other than slightly lower resolution, the title ran at 60FPS. Though Samurai Shodown was expected to release on Nintendo Switch in 2019, it ended up being delayed. In Japan, however, the title did release in 2019, on the 12th of December. Now we have confirmation that Samurai Shodown will release on the 25th of February in the West. If you get it digitally, you’ll need 9.4 GB of space.

If you pre-order Samurai Shodown on Nintendo Switch, you’ll get a port of 1999’s Samurai Shodown! 2 from the Neo Geo Pocket. This title is known to have two distinct variations of each playable fighter, thus giving players 32 unique play styles to master. If you’re not sure if the Switch version is worth it, I own the Japanese version, titled Samurai Spirits. I can tell you firsthand that, yes, the visuals have taken a hit. However, the title does load much quicker than the PlayStation 4 version.

Samurai Shodown first released on PlayStation 4 and Xbox one globally in June of 2019. The hottest console on the market today, Google Stadia, received what some say is the definitive version back in November. The long awaited PC version is still in development, and still expected to release sometime in 2020. Which platform do you feel has the best version of Samurai Shodown. Other features are as follows:

  • Carrying on the Legacy – The new game aims to bring the same tense and exhilarating battles that the series is known for. Intense and epic battles are back!
  • Evolving the Presentation – Using the power of Unreal Engine 4, the series is able to achieve a level of detail never before seen for a totally new visual experience!
  • A Revolutionary new AI system – Using revolutionary Deep Learning AI, the game will learn from player tactics and create Ghost characters which players around the globe can share and fight against.
  • Legendary Series Reborn – Samurai reboot! A brand new Samurai Shodown game takes aim for the world stage!

Some of the most fun I’ve had in 2019 was playing Samurai Shodown. When you pick up the title on Nintendo Switch, there will be a season pass of fighters available to download, with season two expected to kick off this year. You can read all of our Samurai Shodown coverage here. To stay up to date on Samurai Shodown, make sure to follow the developers on Twitter, Facebook, and their official website.

  1. Pretty excited to finally play it. I do hope that Switch owners also get the first season pass for free.
