Egypt torpedoed plans for an “Arab NATO” by withdrawing from any regional military alliance. Again contrary to its Arab benefactors, Egypt sided with the Assad regime but did not get involved militarily in Syria either.

However, one can easily hear the drum beats of war with Turkey in the controlled Egyptian media touting the army as Turkey plans to send troops to Libya. When my apolotical friends ask me whether we’ll go to war with Turkey I answer..

Egypt will most likely increase its current involvement in Libya if Turkey got more involved. It will do more than what it is currently doing. But the point of direct confrontation will not be reached.

Turkey is the 2nd biggest G20 importer of Egyptian goods. Trade between the two countries seems to be going smoothly in parallel with the political animosity. Turkey is an ideological enemy of the Egyptian government making it a good bogyman to use in ramping up support locally
