When it broke up (partly) mid-air, you will find pieces of it spread amongst a larger area. So check the aering pictures of the crash site when they come in. With an engine problem, it would go down in one piece. Also a 737 is able to safely return with a single engine running.

Planes not necessarily break up after a missile hit. It could cause engine failure, decompression and fire and crash before falling apart. Let’s wait and see, if it was shot down they won’t be able to hide it.
