Produced with The Cryptic Corporation using archival tapes supplied by the group themselves, this package explores and expands the classic 1988 album, which saw The Residents work for the first time in an extended narrative form, enabled by the advent of the CD in the mid-late 1980s. 'God In Three Persons' explores the obsessive, toxic but ultimately loving relationship between the narrator, Mr. X, and a pair of conjoined twins - this set includes full lyrics, previously unheard demos, live recordings, and an extended 23 minute piece previously unknown to fans and long forgotten by The Residents themselves. Remastered, expanded, and pREServed for future generations - this is The Residents as we've always wanted to hear them, and the latest in a series of archival reissues that will continue throughout 2019 and beyond. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Contains re-mixed and edited instrumental arrangements of the selections from the original "God In Three Persons". Employing the same stress-scheme as Poe's "The Raven" throughout its 62 minutes, "God In Three Persons" is an extended work in "talking-blues" style for narrator, electronic instruments, and a chorus providing comments not to be found in the libretto -- they sing production credits at the beginning, and lines like "something's coming, but not real soon," and "this is a sad part, oh, such a sad part". This surreal and yet directly delivered work is as lovingly human as it is comic with profound experience simply expressed...in short, an original masterpiece of American music, directly in the tradition of the Thomson-Stein and Robert Ashley operas. As in all Residents pieces, the voices are modified electronically and the musical elements are deceptively minimal--most of its 14 episodes have only two chords which, however, still manage to instantly produce the correct atmosphere (Phil Glass-like Wagnerian thirds for mythic import, tonic-dominant in triplets for 50's teenage love story, etc.). There are only passing riffs, more like comments, and the only melody in the whole piece is a wheezy organ quote of the standard doxology hymn "Holy, Holy, Holy (God in Three Persons)."The subject matter is, in part, the derivation of religious and other symbolic images from the naturally erotic... but that's only part of it. A Great Work That Cuts Itself Off At The Knees

The best of The Resident's "Storyteller" albums, 1988's God In 3 Persons is spoken word over instrumentals and the occasional female Greek chorus of impending doom. The samples on Amazon don't do the album any favors as it's fairly random words out of context. As a whole it's an amazing experience best for late night with headphones or a great sound system. The story of a drifter and ambiguous Siamese twin faith healers in the deep South, it's a tale that'll draw you in and throw you around for a while. The ending, employing the standard Resident's ploy of tripping themselves up for no good reason, ruined it as a performable piece, a shame because it would have been great live. 1990's Cube-E tour was amazing, so there's that consolation, but the shows after that never held the same magic. The most amazing thing I'd ever seen live was during the Black Barry section of Cube-E. At the end a cloth covered cube comes out and it rises to what seems like 10 feet tall with arms that stretch out about 5 feet to each side. I just found this home video on youtube ([...]) and it doesn't do it justice. Sadly they never filmed the entire show.

their shoulders joined together. Then the sun, which had been setting, winked and for a moment all was dark. And when the sun returned above them, no one laughed and made fun of them, for the dog was licking at the joint, barking loud and resurrected and causing them to be respected by those who had avoided them before."
