That time Qassem Soleimani celebrated Eid with Osama bin Laden’s kids and then took them to Friday prayers in Tehran to hear “Death to America”. From an excellent book, The Exile, which is slightly longer than a tweet, alas:

The most intolerable part of this will be the “experts,” who mostly know nothing about Iran, playing the this-will-empower-hardliners tape on infinite loop. Get one thing straight: The moderate/hardliner routine is a regime invention purely for consumption in DC and Brussels.

Soleimani was the architect of the Aleppo siege and consequent massacre. He was the one who orchestrated the deaths of our families in Qusayr, Zabadani, Hama. Soleimani killed ruthlessly, to keep Assad in power - and those he didn’t kill, he rendered refugees or IDPs.

Iraqis — Iraqis — dancing in the street for freedom; thankful that General Soleimani is no more.

Qassem Soleimani was a depraved terrorist who had the blood of hundreds of American servicemen and women on his hands, and who was doubtlessly planning operations to further harm our citizens and allies.

  11. Two protests, two reactions: These thugs with backpacks, military fatigues and Kataib Hezbollah flags can freely attack the US embassy while unarmed Iraqi protestors are slaughtered by Hashd and their IRGC overlords.

  22. Sure, Sultan Murad is the most loyal Turkish proxy, but deploying their fighters to Libya while Assad slaughters Idlib? That's a different level than fighting in Afrin or NE Syria.

Foreign reporters in Iran live in a bubble, in rich north Tehran neighborhoods, cut off from real people. Iranian dual nationals cozy up to regime officials. That’s why real news from Iran often comes from citizen journalists who reach reporters outside.

Good survey by Reuters of the scale of the Nov. protest in Iran. At the top of the Islamic Republic, there was a sense that its very existence was imperiled. “Do whatever it takes to end it,” Khamenei told the Revolutionary Guards.
