    If only. At least between 1814 and arguably 1880s there was the balance-of-powers Vienna system in Europe, and all great powers recognized each other's legitimacy. Today we're moving more towards pre 1648 …

    Poland suffered a martyrdom during WWII, devastated by Germany, partitioned between Germany and USSR and finally subjugated during 45y by USSR. More than 5 millions Poles died (incl. 3 millions Jews). Putin’s comments are outrageous and say a lot about his vision of Europe.

    A simple question: why Anglo-American authors are unable to write a biography in less than 900 pages? 500 is always enough and better by limiting the book to the essential. Synthesis is not an Anglo-American quality....

    What is worrying is not so much the outrageousness of this comment, it’s (1) the way Russia has decided to rewrite history and (2) its aggressiveness towards France and UK. After the assassinations in UK and Germany, easy to conclude it doesn’t care about Europe.

    (1) What makes Turkish deployment in Libya difficult to understand in the West is ignorance not only of of history (Lybia was Ottoman till 1912) but, more importantly, of the logic of power politics. In 1914, the move of Erdogan would have appeared perfectly understandable.
