    Reconstruction of the destroyed temple of Baalshamin in Palmyra is expected to begin this month, in a joint effort by Syrian authorities and UNESCO. This was revealed in August by the director of antiquities in Homs, Hussam Hamish.

  12. The minaret of the Othmaniyah mosque became fully renovated earlier this year. It had endured damage during the war but never collapsed. This mosque was built by Osman Pasha.

  13. Al-Sahibiyah (also known as Al-Fistoq) Mosque has been fully restored since earlier this year. The mosque dates back to the Mamluk era, in the year of 1350. It was then known as Al-Saheb Madrasa.

  14. The Al-Turantaiyah Madrasa and Mosque has seen restoration as well. It was established in the year of 1251, and was named after Afif Ad-Din Al-Turantay Al-Mansuri (Ottoman ruler of Damascus as the time).

  18. A new project is underway in the town of Al-Hameh, Damascus countryside: The Green Island project. This project will provide with 250 housing units, and is currently in its drilling phase.

  19. City Center before the war. It lies at the old clock tower square. Most Homsis have fond memories of this place, and the restoration of it will lift the face of the city.

  20. Good news from Homs of something I have been really waiting for. The rebuilding of Homs City Center mall has just begun. This building was one of the most symbolic and iconic buildings of Homs - its destruction was symbolic and now its restoration will be even more symbolic.

  22. Background info on Mashrou’ Dummar: It is located in the northwestern edge of the city, and is part of New Cham/New Damascus area. It’s a largely middle-class to upper class neighbourhood, that began being built in 1974 and is part of the bigger Dummar district of Damascus.

  38. Al-Sweiqah played an important commercial role in the 18th century, during which it would sell home appliances and utensils. Some Syrian Jewish families imported from Germany and sold them at the souk. The souk continuee specializing in home appliances and utensils until the war.

  39. The commercial Souk Al-Sweiqah near the Umayyad Mosque of Aleppo is under restoration. The souk dates back to the Byzantine era, fifth century AD. The original meaning of the word ”al-sweiqah” is ”small market in a neighbourhood”.
