    Opening the curtains in my pansiyon room in Amasya to the sight of rock tombs carved into the sheer cliffs across the river the morning after arriving by bus late at night was a very memorable travel moment in Turkey. A charming city to be sure, and one that seems to be thriving.

    Tatavla/Kurtuluş is one of the only places in Istanbul where you’ll find Apoyevmatini on a newsstand. Printed since 1925, it is Turkey’s last Greek newspaper. It resolutely continues to publish despite a circulation of just several hundred.
