Video requirements should be evident on video upload

Users want more information on what file formats would be best uploaded, to minimise effects on quality and have a quick transcoding time (presuming if you upload a 720p MP4 it skips the transcoding).

      @jotto141 @ottman

      I believe this to be a high priority, as many video uploaders on our site find the process confusing (I've encountered many). Perhaps we could add an alert in the same place the error box shows, informing users of the video requirements. Worst case scenario we should get a detailed bit written for the /help section.

      Placed in validation, please do move on appropriately if you agree.

      Agreed it is a consistent question. Can you gather the requirements and get Nick to add to help desk in short term? @javanick

      The entire upload process could be improved with titles, thumbnail, and license

    I think we probably support all of the formats listed here; https://imagemagick.org/script/formats.php

    Going to discuss with the team and check there's none that have been manually disallowed.

    As far as I'm aware some form of processing will be inevitable, but as far as requirements go @javanick, the preferred format would be mp4. It transcodes to 720p, so uploads should be 720p at minimum to maximize quality.

    If you can go ahead and update the helpdesk Nick, I'll leave this task open for when we look at this from a UX perspective.

      Will do @markeharding - what are the technical requirements for video uploads?

      E.g. format, resolution, duration etc.

      Up to 1080. Up to one hour for plus and pro channels, 15 min otherwise. Need mark on formats. But if we are doing this we should also bring in custom thumbnail selector to the upload process. Right now it is brutally buried

    @ottman, @markeharding & @benhayward.ben,
    Remember that as far as content creators (that have a good technical understanding of media formats and wish to publish fully optimised content) are concerned, it is not only important to know which video container format are suitable for uploading but also to know which video and audio coding formats (codecs) are suitable for minimum transcoding purposes (and therefore, ideally to reduce server resource consumption within the transcoding process).

    As far as I am aware (from downloading and reviewing existing video content), the optimal container format would be MP4 which contains H.264-MPEG-4 AVC based video and MPEG AAC based audio.
