re: over-analyzing words from translated literature iโ€™ve actually complained about this in my creative writing classes and argue that what we love about murakamiโ€™s writing is actually due to rubinโ€™s genius rubin has a way with words that dramatizes sensibility, murakami does not

but for people studying how to write, theyโ€™re going to attribute it to murakami and also assume these techniques are โ€œjapaneseโ€ we should emulate them because they are different murakami emulating translations of carver is well-known and he even says heโ€™s not that โ€œjapaneseโ€

there just seems to be a reluctance in both critics and writers to recognize that the translated works we read come from the translators, inspired by other things theyโ€™ve read and interacting with the inspirations of the actual writerโ€™s works itโ€™s Just The Writer and itโ€™s bad

i believe itโ€™s connected to how we subconsciously think culture is One Object instead of several discourses interacting with other cultures itโ€™s much easier to analyze something when you reduce translated literature into the work of the author and not the messy world of TLs

when you open your criticism to the idea that translations are just an interpretation and your criticism is an interpretation of an interpretation, it makes analyzing anything very difficult itโ€™s all โ€œis this what the author intended or is it the translatorโ€ stuff

but IMO thatโ€™s where criticism gets interesting: embracing the openendedness of translations can lead us to making provocative criticisms anyway i think whether people intend it or not, all criticisms on translated literature are criticisms on translations as an art

I totally agree, but I think it's also kind of natural for most readers. to consider the work to be Its Own Thing without really wondering much about the creative process behind it. Itโ€™s not a good thing, and I get youโ€™re annoyed by the implications about Japanese writing

in general here, but eventually people just be like that. Eventually Murakami here is an author function, and it's almost completely divorced from both Murakami and his translators. A lot of people just see a book and the author is just a convenient way

I do agree here. You can see it with other things, too, like dubs. I personally really enjoyed the Black Lagoon dub. English works great due to the setting. And then there are more... Transformative ones like Ghost Stories, which played incredibly loose with the source.
