APTIF 9 - Reality vs. Illusion:
From Morse Code to Machine Translation

Co-organized by KATI and ITRI/GSIT

July 5-7, 2019, Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, Seoul, Korea

APTIF 9

About APTIF9

Artificial Intelligence is transforming every aspect of our lives. Translation and interpretation, previously believed to be the exclusive domain of humans, have not been immune to the changes brought on by the development of technology.

In the face of this change, we are compelled to ask a decidedly fundamental question: “For what do we translate and interpret?”
Clients expect first-class translation and interpretation services at reasonable prices, and engineers aspire to develop cutting-edge devices and machines.

Skilled interpreters and translators hope to provide excellent services and, in return, expect appropriate compensation.
Is there a way to achieve all these different needs? Can the utilitarian approach of “the greatest happiness for the greatest number” be the answer?

We are still blinded by unrealistic expectations, because we do not fully understand the changing reality.
However, it is also true that machines are driving changes across the entire field of translation and interpretation.
To restore the most lucid perception of our reality, we must understand and promote the core elements of translation and interpreting, while also appreciating and taking advantage of new technologies.
APTIF9 will provide a flagship platform to address these significant challenges.

Don’t miss this opportunity to connect with like-minded experts from across the globe, as we also celebrate the 40th anniversary of GSIT.

Welcome Message

Greetings from the Chief Organizer of APTIF 9

Hello,

In September 1979, the Graduate School of Interpretation and Translation (GSIT) was established by Hankuk University of Foreign Studies (HUFS) in Seoul, the first graduate school offering a program for simultaneous interpretation education in Asia.

One year later, GSIT dispatched nine students from its first class to T&I schools in Paris, Geneva and Monterey to mark the beginning of the institution's efforts towards global cooperation.

In 2004, GSIT joined CIUTI as the first active member in Asia and, in 2006, GSIT successfully hosted the CIUTI General Assembly on its campus in Seoul. Since then, a number of T&I schools have opened their doors in Korea, engaging each other in competition.

Graduates of GSIT have provided indispensable services as experts, breaking down language barriers at the frontlines of Korea's most important international events, including the 1988 Seoul Olympics.
In 2007, the collective efforts of translators and interpreters throughout Korea finally bore fruit as the Korean Association of Translators and Interpreters (KATI) was founded to promote the collective interests of our colleagues and build amity.

In 2016, KATI was invited by FIT as the second active member of Korea, which enabled it to further expand its contribution to the T&I world as a full-fledged member.
Soon afterwards, FIT recommended KATI to host APTIF 9 in 2019 in recognition of the excellence and expertise of Korean translators and interpreters, authorizing KATI to co-host the Event with GSIT whose graduates make up for the majority of KATI members and as part of GSIT's celebration of its 40th anniversary.

Therefore, we are pleased to host APTIF 9, the greatest T&I event in Korea’s history in July, 2019 on the campus of GSIT. Together, KATI and GSIT seek to create a new arena of international cooperation for the advancement of the world's T&I community.

In running the great event, we will meet, talk and discuss to address recent challenges represented by developments such as artificial intelligence. Thank you.
