    This. If Syria wasn't important enough to the US to rescue from mass murder, why is it important enough to rebuild for Assad? It makes no sense.

    Why do we need a way forward. Who is losing sleep right now over Assad not rebuilding the country he destroyed. His people? He killed and exiled them and those who are left cannot possibly ever benefit from whatever is rebuilt as long as he is in power.

    I have some respect for the "life is unfair, just pay for the reconstruction" argument. I have less respect for any argument that presumes this can be premised on (even incremental) regime concessions. Let's stop with this line of reasoning and make the difficult choices.

    13/ While European states assert that no reconstruction assistance will come absent a meaningful political transition, most seem to agree that a more incremental approach would offer a realistic way forward.

    An entire generation of Hezbollah supporters has grown up not knowing anything but the party and sayyid getting their way in everything (unlike their parents). Repeat after me: Hezbollah is a status quo party. And any self respecting status quo party needs its shabiha.

    I still think often about the "asymmetric polarization" theory popular among political scientists during Obama's first term (guess which side was said to be asymmetrically polarizing)

    It makes more sense to see Trump's rise as a reaction to Democrats moving to the left on immigration in the late 2000's than it does to see Democrats moving to the left as a response to Trump
