Good morning r/popheads

After a drama filled evening, and official statements starting to come out today, the moderators have decided to make an official megathread for any continuing discussion to take place. Any new statements, support, or discussion should go here. I will also create a timeline and sources of known facts and support below:

  • If you live under a rock, Scott Borchetta sold Taylor's masters earlier this year to Scooter Braun. Lots of upset, lots of arguing and statements, and basically nothing changed after it calmed down.

  • Oct. 28: BMR reaches out to Taylor

"Please be advised that BMLG will not agree to issue licenses for existing recordings or waivers of its re-recording restrictions in connection with these two projects: The Netflix documentary and The Alibaba 'Double Eleven' event" source

  • Taylor Swift performs in China for the Double Eleven event, and cuts out half of her set due to this requirement, performing only songs from Lover

  • Flash forward to last night, Taylor Swift posts this message to her Twitter (it has now become her most liked tweet ever)

What this means is that BMR is refusing her to perform or use any of her old music in any way that is being recorded or distributed. Her AMA performance, a previously completely unknown Netflix documentary, etc. She reaches out to her fans, artists signed under the label, and the Carlyle Group, which helped Scooter purchase the masters earlier for help.

TLC's second album CrazySexycool definitely beat the dreaded "sophomore slump". Their first album established them as a girl group to be reckoned wth, but it was their 2nd album that really cemented them as superstars in the mid-90s, with 2 number 1 singles, grammies, AMAs, Billboard awards, etc. etc. and the best selling girl group right after Spice Girls.

Also, how iconic is the album cover????

TLC was special in that each member contributed something different and unique to the group - T-Boz's funky vocals, Left-Eye's clever raps, and Chilli's sexy soulful singing.

Also, CHOREOGRAPHY FOR DAYSSSSS. When you watch highly choreographed performances from back in the day, it really makes you realize that western acts need to step up their game once again.

Singles:

  1. Creep - the a e s t h e t i c s of this video really set the trend in the mid 90s for this sort of sexy round the way girl look, and honestly, if you watch the video now, it's still really trendy (or so I think). This song also has the dubious honor of being the r/popheads ratings #1 #1 song of all the rates for a VERY long time lol

  2. Red Light Special - with the iconic electric guitar

  3. Waterfalls - this is it. Their most timeless hit and their signature song. Even to this day, it's still so topical and relevant, and Left-Eye's rap remains a hopeful message that anyone can relate to. This legendary video is also the first black act ever to win the coveted Video of the Year award at the MTV Video Music Awards.

“Guys - It’s been announced recently that the American Music Awards will be honoring me with the Artist of the Decade Award at this year’s ceremony.

I’ve been planning to perform a medley of my hits throughout the decade on the show. Scott Borchetta and Scooter Braun have now said that I’m not allowed to perform my old songs on television because they claim that would be re-recording my music before I’m allowed to next year. Additionally - and this isn’t the way I had planned on telling you this news - Netflix has created a documentary about my life for the past few years. Scott and Scooter have declined the use of my older music or performance footage for this project, even though there is no mention of either of them or Big Machine Records anywhere in the film.

Scott Borchetta told my team that they’ll allow me to use my music only if I do these things: If I agree to not re-record copycat versions of my songs next year (which is something I’m both legally allowed to do and looking forward to) and also told my team that I need to stop talking about him and Scooter Braun.

I feel very strongly that sharing what is happening to me could change the awareness level for other artists and potentially help them avoid a similar fate. The message being sent to me is very clear. Basically, be a good little girl and shut up. Or you’ll be punished.

This is WRONG. Neither of these men had a hand in the writing of those songs. They did nothing to create the relationship I have with my fans. So this is where I’m asking for your help.

Please let Scott Borchetta and Scooter Braun know how you feel about this. Scooter also manages several artists who I really believe care about other artists and their work. Please ask them for help with this - I’m hoping that maybe they can talk some sense into the men who are exercising tyrannical control over someone who just wants to play the music she wrote. I’m especially asking for help from The Carlyle Group, who put up money for the sale of my music to these two men.

I just want to be able to perform MY OWN music. That’s it. I’ve tried to work this out privately through my team but have not been able to resolve anything. Right now my performance at the AMA’s, the Netflix documentary and any other recorded events I am planning to play until November of 2020 are a question mark. I love you guys and I thought you should know what’s been going on.

Taylor

Last night I had my first performance in Israel. And tonight I will have another.
I am here because I dont believe in cultural boycotting.
There are leaders who does cruel things in this world. But I don’t see how artists culturally boycotting places, will strip these leaders from their power.
Or save innocent people from terror.

People need open cultural dialogue. People need art. And people need to be seen as people.
I am not here to play for the government.
I am here to play for my fans in Israel.
If you want to generalize that is up to you. But I dont want to live that way.
No matter what religion, what sexuality, what origin or birthplace, what political opinion, what colour of skin or gender, we are all worth the same.
To anyone who hasn’t understood that yet, I cry for.
And I cry for human kind as long as there is so much discrimination, violence and terror happening happening amongst us.
But I refuse to look at the 14 year old girl standing in front row and blame it all on her.
She deserves music. And she deserves to be seen as an individual.
Musicians and artists out there shouldn’t be silenced because of political disagreements.
Art should be something we all can share, no matter what.
There is a reason why we always say that - music is the one common language we all can understand.
While I believe in all human rights, my fear is that culturally boycotting targets the people most critical of growth inside their own country.
I want to walk on cultural bridges, and I dont want to be a part of any cultural boycotts.
We might disagree what way is the best way to go forward. But I think we can all agree on that what we all want is justice. we want a world with less violence. and equal rights for human beings. also the right to experience music.

with the end of the decade approaching and the release of his new Terrence Malick-produced biopic, “ Everybody’s Everything ”, i think it’s well worth revisiting the catalogue of a polarizing, queer pop artist who was taken from us way too soon.

lil peep found his audience on Soundcloud via the same cloudy, underground wave as artists like XXXtentacion and smokepurpp, but his songs captured a particular pop energy few others could match.

take a record like “ Crybaby ”, thrown out onto the Soundcloud app in june 2016 - looking back on it you can picture lazily scrolling thru a bunch of new 808-driven trap songs and his voice just coming thru & slicing you like a knife.

the title track and “ Lil Jeep ” capture a dazed, wistful, emotional feeling that feels almost beyond its years for such a young artist, but then he hits you with “ Yesterday ”, an Oasis-sampling track that’s basically the emo rap version of some random white dude pulling out his acoustic guitar at a party and going “anyway... here’s Wonderwall”, and you get a sense of self-deprecation, like he understands that there’s a goofy side to all this heavy emotion.

he went on to drop “ Hellboy ” in september ‘16, a low-slung, grungy record, & further separated himself from the pack with the video for the lead single “Girls”, casting a trans woman of color in a lead role and tweeting it out with a proclamation of “FUCK GENDER ROLES” - basically, the polar opposite of a violently misogynist fellow Soundcloud artist like XXXtentacion.

afterwards, he came out as bi on twitter & before his untimely passing from a fentanyl overdose, dropped a polished, major label pop-punk record, “ Come Over When You’re Sober, pt. 1 ” featuring writing credits from Rob Cavallo and The Invisible Men, cementing himself as an artist with real pop aspirations.

what’s striking about lil peep as an artist is the burgeoning pop sensibility in his music - tracks like “ Kiss ”, randomly thrown out into the Soundcloud void, betray a sticky, catchy, Blink-182-style pop-punk affect - it was hard not to root for him when you found his stuff off of a random playlist & his choruses ended up stuck in yr head for months on end.

and maybe more importantly, what was striking about him as a person was his gentleness, queerness, and quiet understanding, - again, a kind of salve to artists like XXX.

a week or so before his passing, he posted this on his Instagram, venting about his struggles with addiction and sudden fame - the caption would go on to inspire the title of his biopic.
