Police searched the apartment and immediately caught the smell of decomposing flesh. They played interrogation cat and mouse for a bit, but then the officer asked point-blank where the rest of the body was. Nilsen pointed to his wardrobe. They took him to the station and asked whether he'd killed one person or two. "15 or 16 since 1978," he said.
He was eventually convicted of six murders, but that estimate of his seems about right, based on all the bodies they ended up finding. He'd buried some in a garden near an older address of his, and others beneath that place's floorboards. In Muswell Hill, neither of these options were available, so he chopped them up and flushed them -- a slow process that left parts piling up, so he stuck them in the cupboard. He also did all kinds of weird sex stuff to the bodies, but I won't go into that, because that would just be putting a hat on a hat when it comes to this story.

I work at a nuclear plant, and as a part of routine environmental monitoring for us, we check the air for particulates and radiation.
When Chernobyl happened, we can see it on the charts. The spikes are clear and the pattern is the wind to confirm we were not the source. (note the spikes were still well within background levels here in North America, but definitely detectable)
...and that's why all nuclear plants today have a containment structure and we do NOT turn off the safety systems for any reason without redundancies. (Chernobyl turned theirs off for a test deliberately BTW, and did not have a concrete containment structure until after the accident when they built the sarcophagus. )

First one reminds me of a story that I telted here a few weeks ago.
Long story so copy and paste job.
I was working on a pub refurbishment job about twenty years ago in Dublin.
Some workers there found two skeletons when they pulled out a basement wall.
The foreman didn't want the job held up so he had them chucked into a skip (yup wtf??).
The police heard about it so they sent a few men to keep an eye in the skip before it was dumped, but they were watching the wrong skip and the skip with the skeletons was dumped into a landfill.
End of story.
