    Correction: The combination of the name with an incremental number isn't always true. If someone only uses one word as a name, the username still gets 8 digits attached to it.

    My username was automatically generated from the terms I entered as my name. At the end, they added an incrementing number: LucaTest7. Bonus: When I was annoyed by not being able to deactivate the account, I changed the username. There I was offered the 8 digits once again. /6

    The solution: Switching to Chrome. While I was unable to deactivate the account in Firefox, it worked in Chrome on the first try. /5

    I was confused that "Members of the German Bundestag" wasn't an interest option any more, but later realized that I am in Bulgaria. Mostly US politicians were recommended to me. Trump wasn't among them. /3

    The Twitter signup/onboarding slightly changed since July 2019 (). Mail confirmation is asked while signing up, instead of afterwards. No more intimidating "your account got locked" message. /1

    But the 8 digits are a good indicator for accounts that were created recently. Twitter switched to generating the username by combining the name with an incrementing number: Luca1, Luca2, …, Luca374. To get 8 digits, you have to set them manually.

    In the past I argued against using the random string of 8 digits as an indicator for inauthentic accounts, because that's what Twitter suggested to new users as a username until around 2018: . /1

    4/ I downloaded around 15,000 tweets from around 10,500 unique Twitter accounts tweeting on the hashtag. When organized by creation date the result was staggering. 2671 accounts were created in March 2015. The average is only around 70 per month! That is phenomenal.

    I reconstructed the recipient through the topic_id, because both parties had the same topic_id when sending messages to each other. The unanswered messages often were spam (join our discord; join our forum) and usual drama (let the thread die; you are ruining my Christmas). /3

    The connections between two accounts represent messages they exchanged. The more messages, the bigger the arrow. There were 22k messages in the dataset. I ignored unanswered messages because the messages only had a topic_id and author_id, no recipient_id. /2
