    私がもっと若かった頃、「中東イスラーム業界」で、私と、有力者との間で中立的な立場にたっていた有力な人（複数）が、裏では「お前の言っていることは正しい。だが、これは日本の知のあり方の深いところに由来しているものなので、戦っても無駄だ」という旨を言いに来た。

    飯山さんの言っていることの中には、時々一方的だったり外れていると思うこともあるが、イスラームと世界をめぐる非常に大きな問題を捉えて取り組んでいる。それに「中東イスラーム業界」に正統に位置していると思い込んでいる人たちが一切触れられないことが、問題の大きさと深さを物語る。

    また出張。断れない、変わってもらえない仕事が重なっているので、周辺でいろいろご迷惑かけています。やめられるならやめたいが、客観的に他にいないし、代役や次の世代が生まれてこない、仮設研究室の宿命。自由にはやれるのですが。最初に勤めた研究所の3年以外は、部署に上司のいない職業人生。
