Friends! You can now officially order my book, “Hunger & Fury: The Crisis of Democracy in the
#Balkans” via@HurstPublishers. This is the culmination of nearly a decade of work and I’m so excited for you to finally take a look. Thank you, one and all.http://www.hurstpublishers.com/book/hunger-and-fury/…Show this thread -
An astute but disturbing assessment of Macron's view of contemporary European affairs, which echoes similar observations myself and numerous Balkan colleagues have made over the last few weeks. Again I say, he is not a vulgarian but he's certainly a xenophobe.https://twitter.com/MacaesBruno/status/1192523851915284484…

The Chairman of Bosnia’s Presidency will summon France’s Ambassador to Sarajevo over Macron’s comment viz the country in his
@TheEconomist interview. Good.https://www.klix.ba/clanak/191107150… -
Between Macron, Trump, Brexit, and Nordstream I’m surprised Putin hasn’t already invaded the Baltics. Western governments tripping over themselves to deliver gifts to the Kremlin. Incredible, infuriating.https://twitter.com/afp/status/1192497414965465094…

France's allies would do well to take a sober look at who Macron is disparaging and who he is coddling, in the Balkans and in general. Increasingly clear that to preserve European stability and security, his govt's illiberal sympathies and unilateralism must be opposed. /xxx

His claims in this landmark interview viz. Balkans, and Bosnia specifically, are thus at fundamentally misinformed by also clearly malign. They are not true, and are the product of Macron's growing ties to right-wing & illiberal regional govts, his disturbing proximity to Moscow.
Show this thread -
Not only that, but Macron insists on "resetting ties" with Russia, which also includes selling French arms to Moscow's close ally Serbia. Even though there were est to be some ~300 Serbian foreign fighters in occupied Ukraine.https://balkaninsight.com/2018/12/13/donbass-brothers-how-serbian-fighters-were-deployed-in-ukraine-12-12-2018/…

Also note the broader context: as Macron spreads disinformation viz. Bosnian foreign fighters, the U.S. has actually been working w/ Bosnian security services to counter the threat of extremism in the region.https://www.klix.ba/vijesti/bih/zamjenik-direktora-cia-e-vaughn-bishop-stigao-u-sarajevo/190425086…

That's why he is specifically invoking Croatia. It's clear the HDZ establishment in Zagreb has been stove-piping Macron this line, much as they've previously tried to literally fabricate terror plots in Bosnia.https://balkaninsight.com/2019/03/14/bosnia-probes-alleged-croatian-plot-to-discredit-it/…
Show this thread -
But Croatia's President, in particular, has repeatedly claimed that Bosnia has emerged as some hotbed of radical Islam, a claim she's been making for yrs & yet to produce a shred of evidence. That's where Macron is getting this line.http://ba.n1info.com/English/NEWS/a360049/Bosnia-s-officials-and-Jews-Croatian-President-tried-to-discredit-Bosnia.html…

Facts: as of 2019, less than 400 Bosnian nationals joined ISIS. Most of those have not returned to Bosnia, significant portion were killed in Syria. For comparison, at least 1,600 jihads came from France, another 600 from Germany since 2013.https://balkaninsight.com/2019/02/20/bosnian-plans-captured-isis-fighters-return-from-syria/…

Extraordinary disinformation from Macron's interview w/
@TheEconomist. We need to unpack this claim viz. Bosnia bc it's extremely pernicious and dangerous, and something he's clearly cribbed from Croatia's increasingly far-right leaning President Garbar-Kitarovic. [Thread]pic.twitter.com/CCBkKHlyYsShow this thread -
Many have observed that a marginally smarter or more competent version of Trump could do significantly more damage to U.S. domestic institutions and international stability. That’s what’s coming into view w/ Macron; buttoned-up Trumpism.https://news.yahoo.com/frances-macron-says-nato-experiencing-brain-death-113033026.html…

I labeled Macron a “less vulgar Trump” after his blockade of North Macedonia and Albania’s accession talks and this really clinches it. He has the same provincial worldview of global politics in which he confuses his own arrogance for wisdom.https://twitter.com/thomaswright08/status/1192403094149173250…

It’s clear the
@NobelPrize folks chose to ignore and/or did not care to know about Handke’s relationship w/ Milosevic and/or his revolting apologia. But this will remain as great a stain on their record as the decision not to strip Aung San Suu Kyi of her 1991 Peace Prize.Show this thread -
All manner of Western “useful idiots” carried water for Milosevic. Noam Chomsky, Ed Herman, Tariq Ali, John Pilger, Lewis MacKenzie etc. But actually receiving a passport and citizenship from a pariah state still then under international sanctions?! I’m honestly floored.
Show this thread -
The revelation by
@maassp that Peter#Handke was granted a Yugoslav passport by Milosevic regime is extraordinary. The man was/is not merely a genocide denier, he’s, in essence, a mouthpiece of one of the most murderous regime’s of the 20th century.https://theintercept.com/2019/11/06/nobel-prize-literature-peter-handke-yugoslavia-passport/…Show this thread -
Let’s be clear: the official policy of the Serbian state viz. the wars in Croatia, Bosnia, and Kosovo is revisionism and denialism. This not a marginal event. This is “The State” rewriting history, to advance the contemporary political objectives of the Vucic regime.https://twitter.com/birn_btj/status/1192000163134525440…

Strong, sharp comments by UK’s Karen Pierce at the UNSC arguing Bosnia has fulfilled all criteria to legally submit NATO ANP but is being unconstitutionally and illegally obstructed from doing so by Dodik’s SNSD regime in Banja Luka. Important clarity.https://www.klix.ba/clanak/191106108…
-
Dodik really going old school, as his SNSD has now begun referring to East Sarajevo by the Karadzic-era name “Serb Sarajevo”, a term tossed out by Bosnia’s Constitutional Court. The rhetoric of revisionism and obstructionism.https://twitter.com/snsddodik/status/1192088293569159169…

Sen. Paul, the self-declared libertarian and constitutionalist, named after a Soviet emigre, bending over backwards to provide political cover for a President widely understood to be both undermining the rule of law in the U.S. and carrying water for the Kremlin. A rare and precious example of a Bosnian commemorative hybrid: a Christian-Muslim gravestone, 16th c. Two of them, one alas damaged, have survived in this still active Muslim cemetery in a central Bosnian village.

Russia’s activities in the U.S. and UK in 2015-16 were part of one disinformation and elxns sabotage campaign, aiming to undermine the democratic regimes of the two load-bearing states of the international liberal order. Amb. Yovanovitch’s testimony paints a remarkable picture of the state of the U.S. foreign service in the Trump era; it’s an account not befitting a constitutional republic but a illiberal, captured state. And that’s a concern not just for all Americans but all of U.S. allies.

Heavy blows to traditional accounts of EU's engagement in SEE by

I confess, I did not fully appreciate the extent to which the end of EU enlargement would become an extended seminar on competing political historiographies of “Rumelia” but, alas, here we are.

Reminder: Welch's maxims on dissertation writing: 1. It's not your life's work, just a long essay. 2. A good dissertation is a bad draft of a good book. 3. Don't get it right; get it written. 4. Write anything. Revising is easy. 5. Three pages a day and you'll finish in no time.

Rama is trying to “work with” the radicalization of mainstream EU political discourse, popular far-right demands for “preservation” of “Christian Europe” but that’s the wrong play. It’s a kind of auto-liquidation that indulges fascist fantasies about a imagined past.
Show this thread -
Historical revisionism here by Albania’s Rama but bold politics. He’s playing w/ latent fear of the Balkans’ Muslim pop by West Europeans to turn their prejudices on their head, make renewed appeal for enlargement. It’s likely to backfire tho and make “the quiet part loud.”https://twitter.com/valeriein140/status/1191258387998269440…

Comes a time in every man’s life when you take stock — of your accomplishments, of your failures, of the people who have made you, and made all of this toil and trouble worth the struggle, and then you realize, my God, it’s all just a footnote to the 1878 Congress of Berlin.

You're seeing true political implications of the emigration crisis in the Balkans & Bosnia especially, coming into view in this clip. There is seething, furious rage bubbling under the surface of these polities (cf. 2014 protests). And it will boil over, sooner rather than later.
