Why is last-hitting turrets even a thing?
It seems like if I accidentally let the minions last-hit a turret I get less gold, even if I was there for the "assist".
But when Riot released this system they said it was a pool that goes to everyone who contributed, so it shouldn't matter if I last-hitted it or not...
We're testing a new feature that gives the option to view discussion comments in chronological order. Some testers have pointed out situations in which they feel a linear view could be helpful, so we'd like see how you guys make use of it.

if you stand next to the tower when the minions take it you still get the full gold.

last hitting is bad unless you're actively trying to push it down
if you want to deny you might as well wait next to the tower for the minions to finish it off so the tower kills off more of your creeps because you still get the gold in the end

You take your dota lingo out of here.

Wtf kind of stupid mechanic is that?
So if I bring it down to 100 hp, then speedboost away and let the minions finish it off, I don't get the gold because of "distance" even though I did damage to it 2 seconds ago?

Yes.

I don't get that either.
And honestly I don't get why I don't even get an assist when I damaged the turret a second before it is destroyed.

Yes.
Riot games and their #clarity.
That is not "assist gold". That is not an "assist", as it is defined in the game.

because you're not getting assist gold when you stand next to it, you're getting full kill gold for getting the tower even if the minion last hits it.
the global gold is the assist gold.

It still doesn't make sense considering how they explained it when the feature was released.
ie: I was plat last season and I was STILL doing it wrong up to this day because of the lack of #clarity

or maybe you just understood it wrong.
It was very clear from the beginning. towers give global gold, if you're within so many units of the tower when it falls, you get 250 gold that's further divided up the more allied champs are in the area.

The way I remember it explained, you got that gold if you "contributed to the kill"
I don't think they mentioned "units" but I could be wrong. I'm eating so I don't wanna search the patch notes right now.

if you're within the turrets attack range you get extra gold.
That's basically the jist of it.

.
Outer turrets now grant 100 global gold per player and 150 gold split among the players who participate in destroying the turret
Inner turrets now grant 125 global gold per player and 100 gold split among the players who participate in destroying the turret
Inhibitor turrets now grant 175 global gold per player
kind of hard to "participate" in tower breaking when you're 800 units away from it, no?
i don't understand how its' riot's fault you failed to understand the mechanic, it's pretty straight forward, if you're close to the turret when it dies,, you get gold. If you aren't, you don't.

Not in League of Gapclosers, where you can move 800 units in less than a second.
Do I still get the gold if I do 0 damage to the turret (eg: run into range just as the minions take it down)?
