Haphne hate thread

Since there’s been so many pro Haphne threads, there should also be a thread discussing why it’s not that interesting a ship. Let’s talk about the worst most cliche aspects of this ship and why it’s inexplicably so popular

Oh why not? I'm actually somewhat fond of it, but have my gripes.

  1. Ice Queen Daphne. I almost never see her portrayed as anything other than the stereotypical "Ice Queen of Slytherin" who's cold, distant, and aloof from everyone at Hogwarts. She's also either a pureblood who just happens to disagree with Voldemort or a Half-Blood who found her way into Slytherin. This means she's just waiting for Harry to come and melt her poor ice queen heart, and ally with him in his fight against Voldemort, or be saved from the other evil Slytherins who hate her.

  2. Daphne is almost always portrayed as a brilliant witch on the level of Hermione or superior if it's a Hermione bashing fic. You never see her written as having a couple of good to great areas, but also weaknesses. She has to be good at everything and super powerful to keep up with Harry.

  3. She's almost always portrayed as incredibly beautiful. Rare is the fic where Daphne is anything remotely approaching ordinary.

  4. Authors often portray her family accepting Harry instantly and allying with him no matter what the circumstances might be.

  5. Harry in Haphne fics is always either Lord!Potter or Indie!Harry which often makes the plot stupidly predictable. He's always super rich and overpowered, and often a "Founders Heir."

  6. Marriage contracts need to die in Haphne fics.

  7. It's almost always same narrative. Manipulative!Dumbledore, betrayed by Ron and Hermione, and Daphne proving to be superior to both in all ways.

  8. Ginny is often bashed and bastardized beyond all in Haphne fics even when it's supposed to be a 'love triangle'

As for why it's popular? Easy. Daphne is just a name on a list, and can be anything the author wants her to be. She has no canon personality or description, and that makes her easy to use for wish fulfillment. Fanon has taken it and run with it, and created a 'standard Daphne' that so many fanfics use as gospel. It's an easy self insert or Mary Sue ship to use, and not a lot of people do it well.

Spot on!

Oh How much I hate when they replaced Hermione with Daphne. Daphne was nothing but a Hermione with blonde hair and in slytherin. Not only haphne but in almost all ships except Harmony, lead girl usually more intelligent than Hermione and bashes Hermione for her stupidity and ignorance.

level 2

Might try write my first full fanfic that purposely avoids all these points, could be fun

I live in India, where the types of social interaction and public behaviour delineated in pro-Pureblood fics, like in most Haphne ones, are still the reality more often than not, and its nowhere near as romantic as is portrayed here.

Also, Ice Queen/Prince type characters are so very, very boring to me; and if I never read one more fic talking about social masks as if they're real, physical things, it would be too soon.

Honestly I have no good reason to hate this ship but it’s always the same sh*t. Bashing of Ginny, Daphne is beyond perfect. Senseless bashing too! They don’t even try for an original plot! There is literally no fic were I have seen depth of character when they are together. So stupid! I’m just gripping now but when I see what authors do with other characters who really have to past or anything involved. I’m always disappointed in Haphne fics!

I think just like with any pairing, if you use too many cliches and don’t have an even remotely original storyline the pairing can be bad. But IMO there are a lot of quite enjoyable Haphne stories (Importance of Intent, The Mind Arts,...). And to be honest, from time to time I can even enjoy a "Ice Queen" and Lord!Potter story.

The point I’m trying to make is, with the baseline of an attractive pure-blooded slytherin girl paired with Harry can come a lot of interesting stories.

My name is Daphne Greengrass. I'm 15 years old. My house is Slytherin, where all the purebloods are, and I am not dating anyone. I study as a student at Hogwarts, and I leave the library every day by 8 PM at the latest. I don't smoke, but I occasionally drink. I'm in bed by 11 PM, and make sure I get eight hours of sleep, no matter what. After having a glass of warm milk and doing about twenty minutes of stretches before going to bed, I usually have no problems sleeping until morning. Just like a baby, I wake up without any fatigue or stress in the morning. I was told there were no issues at my last check-up. I'm trying to explain that I'm a witch who wishes to live a very quiet life. I take care not to trouble myself with any enemies, like winning and losing, that would cause me to lose sleep at night. That is how I deal with society, and I know that is what brings me happiness. Although, if I were to fight I wouldn't lose to anyone.

Except for that last sentence, I'd consider reading it.

I recommend you read Ice Cream by Andrius over at Fanfiction.net. It's so cute. No lord Harry shit The ice queen stuff is nonexistent except for 1 line with Daphne where Daphne sees it as derogatory and mean-spirited.

Really looking forward to the backlash to the backlash post that this will inevitably spawn.

The only issue i have with this ship is the Ice Queen trope and the over use of politics in them, but i love the cute fics it spawns

She's an OC with a canon name, and a lot of her popularity comes from people who whitewash slavery and bigotry by going "(fanon) pureblood culture, fuck yeah!"

Harry Potter and Daphne Greengrass in stories where they’re romantically involved

"My father told about you Weasleys," Draco snarls in an attempt to sound like his father. "Red hair, doesn't know the first thing about manners." Taking a good look at his fellow first year Draco raised an eyebrow, "You're robes are nicer than I thought they would be. Did your father finally manage to stop playing with muggles and do something useful?"

The redhead was shocked silent at the tirade Draco issued forth, and looking at Crabbe and Goyle as they attempted to be intimidating as their fathers taught them was truly a sight to behold. Taking a moment to gather himself the redhead stood up just a little straighter and spoke with an air of forced haughtiness. "I don't know any Weasleys. My name is Prince Henry Charles Albert David. Son of Prince Charles and Princess Diana of Wales, and Third in line to inherit the throne of England." Losing the tone of false haughtiness the prince grinned, "But please, call me Harry.

//////

I know I'm messing with the dates a little bit but a comment interaction where someone mentioned the fact that Prince Harry was a redhead just inspired this short little blurb.

And it was a really cool thought to be like "What if Prince Harry was a Muggleborn?"

Feel free to take this idea and run with it!

One of the things that strike me about Hermione/whoever time travel stories is how she’s easily able to fit into any society that she’s thrown into whether it’s the Slytherin Purebloods of the 1940s, or the utmost confidence of the Marauders and Lily (and maybe Snape, for some reason)- But she can barely fit into her own social circle in the 1990s. One could argue it’s because of her Muggleborn status, but really she is hopelessly awkward and that’s never touched upon in these stories. She’s always poised, very intuitive to the slightest facial expressions, and inhumanely empathetic.

Now compare that to the "11 years old Slytherin master politician" trope.

So my question is, which version of them do you like more?

It drives me crazy that Harry has an incredibly unique gift that is barely used through the series. Can you recomend a fic in which he speaks to snakes a bit more often? I'd preferred to avoid the overpowered!Harry or Dark Harry - just our usual Harry, but using his gift a bit more.

There are so many old HP groups on Yahoo Groups, some of them with fanfic that is nowhere else. I see that a few of the still-active ones have plans for how to back up their data and move somewhere else, but many do not.

If you're in any yahoo groups, back them up while you still can!

You can join efforts to back up auto-join/public groups to the Internet Archive here. (This is currently very fandom-centric since we've sent them a priority list of fandom groups.) This one is super easy. Anybody can help. They just need more people.

Info on fandom-specific efforts and backing up less public groups is being coordinated here.

And on a more discussion-y note, what were your favorite Yahoo Groups?

Like, think about it. you couldn't duel anyone, for fear that some random person has a wand with a hair from the same unicorn, or a heartstring from the same dragon! Phoenixes are rare, which should only make this even more common with wands containing their feathers! Fawkes may have only given two feathers, but there must be more domestic phoenixes out there for all those ollivander wands, and many of these must be brother ones.

And unicorns! have you seen how many hairs horses have in their mane or tail? there must be like a hundred wands all brothers to eachother.

Because Peter Pettigrew sounds a lot less guilty when he claims 'I Apparated away but splinched my finger off' instead of 'I cut my finger off then turned into a rat'. Not forgetting the existence of the Imperius Curse and Obliviate and all the other mind-altering magic around.

Also, having Aurors guard the castle instead of (or at least in addition to) the Dementors is probably more sensible.

As the title says what was first fanfiction you read or the first you can remember reading?

I can't remember the title of my first fanfiction but it was about James and Lily being alive so Harry would have been raised in a loving family and all that.

But the first fanfiction that I have the most vivid memory of is recnac transfero by Celebony so I sometimes count it as my first.

Just assume this is a Dark or Indy Harry:

Harry relaxed in his solar. "Ahhh, life was good" he thought as he took a pitcher of wine his servants prepared earlier. He was now the Hand of the King. It wasn't that difficult, to be honest. After he appeared in this strange reality three years ago, he was momentarily floored. All those strange people, and the language! Don't get him start on the language. But he persevered. In the end finding his place in this new world was quite easy. A couple of geminio charms on some stealthily summoned coins and he was golden. Who cared if they disappeared after a time, the merchant would just believe them stolen.

Being the resourceful person that he was, he went to the capital, King's Landing. A truly atrocious name. Talk about grandstanding. But still, he managed to worm his way into the court, with a few very careful Imperius curses and a couple memory charms.

It took him a few years, but now he had a comfortable life as the most powerful person in the kingdom.

That fat king barely stood a chance and currently he was ready to proceed with his plans. He will bring the light of the 20th century to these uncultured people. Printing press, electricity, perhaps even combustion engines if he figured out how they worked. But he had time. He will likely live to be over 100 years old, and considering he was only 20 right now, it still left him with plenty of time to uplift these idiots.

He had asked his scribes to draft preliminary laws on the emancipation of small folk, another stupid name. It would meet with some opposition, but memory charms worked wonders, as did the confounding charm.

Harry reached for his wine and took a sip, while thinking on the way he could help the people of Westeros.

...

He coughed.

"Damn, that must have went down the wrong pipe." Harry said as he poured another cup and quickly downed it.

He began to cough violently again.

As he went for his wand his legs gave out and he fell down.

"Aahh... I was wondering when it would begin to work." a simpering voice said.

The owner of the voice came into his view, towering over Harry who was violently clawing at his neck in a desperate attempt to regain some air.

It was Varys, looking over Harry with a face that screamed contempt.

"You didn't think that I wouldn't keep a good eye on you, did you?" Varys said.

Harry's eyes were red as he tried to say anything while finally reaching for his wand.

"None of that now, my dear magician." the Spider quickly removed the wand from Harry's hand before he could even think of a spell.

"Yes, you might think poison is such a bad way too kill a person. Especially one as powerful as yourself. But remember Harry, even the most powerful can be caught unaware and you are still only a man. I might had to up the dosage a bit, didn't want to risk you knowing a spell for antidotes or something similar. Ever since you came here, I watched you, I observed your every move and frankly I'm disappointed. You were quite foolish all things considered. Did you think you waving your stick wouldn't be observed by people? Perhaps not, the powerful often overlook those they think inferior. The reality will quickly reassert itself either way. Goodbye, Harry Potter."

With that Varys turned around and entered a small hidden passage, leaving the dying wizard on the floor.

Hey all,

I'm trying to recall the name of a fic that was written about Harry meeting and starting to have feeling for a new girl.

One of the later chapters has the girl and Hermione in the same scene which confuses the girl (Hermione in disguise) and once Hermione corners Harry to beg him not to invest too much into the girl, Harry dismisses her. Turns out that Hermione used a time tuner to go back in time that made that scene possible.

Appreciate if anyone can link me back to that story!

What if “electronics don’t work at Hogwarts” is because there is an overwhelming amount of magic? Has anyone done the opposite? Where MAGIC doesn’t work in the muggle world because of all the electronics?

Could be interesting.

I don’t typically read female Harry because most of them are poorly written, but when I do some of the name choices kill me.

Personally, while I hate the name Harriet, I do prefer it because then Harry can continue to be called Harry and I don’t get confused.

(And if any of you have any decent fem!Harry fics I’d love to give them a look)

There's this fanfic where Flitwick finds an original draft of Harry's essays and realises that he's dumbing down his essays. Anyone remembered which fic this is?

I’m not talking about the trial or lack thereof Sirius recurved for the muggles deaths. I’m referring to Dumbledore not having Sirius take care of Harry when there is suspicion he might be a servant of Voldemort.

Edit for clarity : I’ve seen it asked/stated in fanfics and here several times that Sirius is Harry’s rightful guardian and should have been given Harry and Harry not going to the Dursley’s. If Dumbledore thinks that Sirius is the secret keeper(that was the plan until the last minute) and he’s completely fine and yet told Voldemort the secret, why would he be willing to let Sirius keep Harry?

If you had the belief that a man just betrayed and got 2 people killed, would you let that man take care of that child? And if he is talking to other powerful people about this and what options they have, what do they do? “If a mans best friend since 11 betrayed them, who can we trust?” “There’s still a lot of people who would do him harm if they had the chance” “I will put him with his blood relatives, hidden behind powerful magic to protect him, but secrecy is paramount to protect him best” The chaos at the end of the war would mean that someone as looked up at as Dumbledore saying he would ensure the safety of their newest hero would probably be accepted. However, to better ensure that nobody can find Harry there can’t be any checks on the house or the people by the ministry (because who knows who can be trusted and could they be interrogated or bribed and reveal Harry’s location).

So I was curious why in most fanfics featuring goblins they are portrayed as a warrior race? When as far as I remember they were not in the actual books. My own personal opinion was that they were blacksmiths and craftsmen, due to the whole goblin forged swords and such.

I have been seeing this happening a lot lately, and I have only one question for the people doing it, WHY? I know I can't control other people's behavior, but this seems like the cruellest type of post to downvote.

I'm trying my hardest to make this post not look like me venting, (I have seen it happen to lots of people), but the next little bit does sound that way sorry.

Most of the time when I post a "What's That Fic" post, this is my last resort. I spend hours googling and searching for the fic before I even consider posting here. So what does it feel like when you ask for help and you get the most impersonal rebuff possible? Not only does it communicate "I think you are foolish to ask that here" it also is a "I don't want other people to help you" (because it pushes the thing down the rankings). So you go to your last resort and get basically told "Because I don't like the plot of the fic you are looking for, I don't want you to enjoy it again either." Downvoting one of these posts could remove it from the view of someone who DOES know what it is.

I'd prefer a "you are stupid and the fic you are looking for is stupid" to a downvote, because at least that starts conversation. I could be looking for a fic we both hate, just because it is in the back of my mind and I can't let it go. I could be looking because a friend asked me. I could be looking so I can laugh at how bad my taste was in the past. You don't know why I want to find it again.

If someone asks for a fic you hated, post it and tell them you hated it and why. That lets others know why they might want to stay away, gives the person who's asking what they were looking for, and starts discussion on this subreddit for fanfiction discussion.

For example, someone asked for a fic that I read out of morbid curiosity, just a very weird fic.

So I broke it down.

I'm kinda sad that I know this one, its (removed for everyone's sanity.)

I let them know that I personally don't like the fic, but then I give it to them anyway. Then I let people know why I disliked it.

This one is super weird, after the slaves and nudity dimension (fic reads like they wanted to write a smut fic, but there are no sex scenes, (and the sub plot here is freeing the slaves), so does it really have to be a nudity dimension too?) they go through a dimension where cannibalism is legal and happens all the time, and after that it randomly turns into a crossover with buffy the vampire slayer. The Hermione in every universe has a different name for some reason.

I let people know that it has very distasteful content so no one goes in uninformed, and that's it.

Back in book one there was a line - Ron whispered to Harry. "I'll kill Fred, he was going on about wrestling a troll." - Are there any fics out there where this is a thing?

Since it has been stuck in my head for days now i've got an idea of how it would go in order to make it work for sorting purposes i'm thinking it would have to be something like McGonagall leads them to a room just off the great hall and says they need to get past a troll to be admitted as students.

The Gryffindors would probably volunteer to try first or go one at a time maybe following the advice or jeers of others.

Hufflepuffs would maybe try attacking in a group, dragging away the wounded students, or fetching things for the Ravenclaws.

Ravenclaws would maybe ask for clarification on the rules, relevant texts, see if the professor has any advice.

Slytherins would just sneak out of the room while everyone else was busy and go through the main doors into the great hall, either because they got told by family members (thus enforcing the mostly pure blood thing in slytherin) or they saw others doing so and figured it out.

I could imagine Draco dragging along Crabbe and Goyle for instance.
Hermione getting into Gryffindor because even if she looked up some spell or whatever she felt she had something to prove and the professor said they had to.
Neville might get into Gryffindor even if he thought himself to be worthless just because his gran told him his father did and he had to do the same.
Luna could be Ravenclaw because she sat in the back reading the Quibbler and just went with the Ravenclaw crowd causing animosity etc etc.

I'm looking for fics that have a lot of Sirius in them, either raising Harry or being an important influence on him after he escapes Azkaban. However, I tend to dislike fanon "Noble and Ancient Houses" stuff. I prefer fics where "The Ancient and Noble House of Black" was just a pompous affectation Walburga Black and her inbred relatives put on, instead of an actual political/economic reality of Wizarding Britain. Slytherins prancing around with Regency-era manners, weirdly blank facial expressions and holding champagne flutes is also a pet peeve, but I can tolerate that in small doses.

I've read The Dogfather by Hollimichele and I'd like more in that vein if anyone knows of any fics that fit requirements. Thank you! linkao3(https://archiveofourown.org/works/13760487/)

I'm tired of comic book villain Voldemort; give me fics where he's actually a smart and competent leader rather than an impulsive madman who split his soul more times than the old Dark magic books said he should.

Disclaimer: I saw this as a post on Instagram and I'm fairly certain the post itself was from Tumblr.

Basically, Hermione presents the fact that Pluto is not, in fact, a planet and uses this as proof for Divination all being codswallop. However this has been throwing off predictions for a long time and now Divination becomes an actual thing and Hermione is worshipped as the Saviour of Divination.

Please read the disclaimer if you skipped it.
