  1. Which is why I never use the word Caucasian to describe a white man. These guys wouldn't even be able to point to the Caucasus on a map if their life depended on it. And the history of the word is really perverted and creepy.

    Show this thread
  2. Oh by the way if you're wondering why whites are called Caucasian... This comes from a centuries old fascination of Western European men fetishising women from that region and being blown away by accounts of how beautiful and submissive the women from the Caucasus were.

  3. I think that just about covers what I wanted to say for now but in case you were wondering when the idea of a unifed, single white race was theorised... For that we have to wait until the middle of the 20th century!

  4. Unfortunately, I don't know too much about Roman history. Never read much about them except for watching melodramatic US documentaries on them. But I do know 'tribes' are created by migration and intermarriage. What made people different was not skin or blood but civilization.

  5. Back to the Romans. Caesar and Tacitus, ironically, looked admirably towards the Germani *tribes* and criticised their own civilization. The people back then were divided into tribes. For example, the Gauls were to the west of the river Rhine and Germani to the east.

  6. We must wait until almost 1800 for the term 'caucasian race' to be coined by Blumenbach. For him, races were intertwined with aesthetics & skin colour was ranked but it was also linguistic - Indians were also termed Caucasian. The term 'white' race is ever shifting (see Irish).

  7. The first time scientists put forth the idea of 'race' was in the middle of the 18th century & even then the idea of a 'white race' as a whole, unified race was not set. There were many European races. One example is the Celtic race who were often equated with Blacks in US.

  8. divided geographically. American Natives were strangely boxed in the same category of Europeans and so were north Africans. Total physical appearance rather than skin colour alone were the criteria.

  9. I hate to share this awful guy's tweets but only doing so for educational purposes. This idea of a Roman race back then shows historical illiteracy. The earliest racial classification system was in the very late 17th century by a Frenchman. Here, there were four races...

An extremely potent concept in Turkish which shapes the Turkish approach to Islam is "kul hakkı". I can translate it to Arabic, but I haven't seen it being used as centrally among Arabs. This might be from my limited observation but nevertheless, it's an important concept.

  11. I think it is a feature that is missing in other fields of Twitter I'm in, namely Syria twitter. There, although individuals may be directly argued against or memed (like or ) it is largely focussed on debating the arguments of the whole side.

  12. In recent debates one side elevated & the other side to use these accounts as a caricature of the opposing side. Both are questionable people with extremely problematic views or associations & it does a disservice in pursuing authentic conversations.

  13. A feature of MT debates that you notice is how opposing sides seem to set up a caricature that supposedly represents the other side. Once set-up they pick apart the caricature to claim victory in the debate by tarnishing the other side.

I was literally listening to a podcast this morning by The Daily entitled "The Life and Death of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi" and the journalist behind it was Rukmini. All I was thinking was how shallow her analysis and how rudimentary her understanding of everything she spoke on was

Roggio and Joscelyn had an article up about a decade ago on how you can identify Pakistani radicals by the fact that their pants are pulled up above the ankles, heeyup

  20. Rukmini's hot takes over the years makes so much more sense now that we know her go-to experts are neo-cons Bill Roggio and Thomas Joscelyn.

  21. My graphpad prism crashed along with all the figures I created and analysed since yesterday night. Silly me never bothered to hit the save button once. Does that I mean I get the day off or do I now have to pull an all-nighter?

  22. Many of us of here will be between 50 to 65 years old and a witness to this catastrophe. We will be living for another 20-40 years through this mess. Mostly south east Asia, India and China but it will be global.

  23. When I say alot of activism is based on anger and emotion a perfect example is the reaction to the progressives being projecting alt-right talking points. Also, being sensitive to progressive debauchery but resistant to racist/ alt-right figure heads are other examples.

Remarkable historical fact that before its abolishment by the Turkish Republic, the last Ottoman imperial government convicted and sentenced to death a number of top Young Turk officials responsible for the genocide of Armenians. (From “Fall of the Ottomans” by Eugene Rogan)

Just finished Brave New World. Wow. A fascinating excerpt of Neil Postman’s Amusing Ourseves to Death where he contrasts it with Orwell’s vision, arguing our society is better described by Brave New World...sedating ourselves into bliss.

It's disgusting how that group goes around calling Muslims 'IS supporters'. Abu Layth & his ilk, like that Mamadou guy, accuse you of many things but let's remember what we know about Abu Layth, a conniving, shady figure. People in glass houses they say:

  29. The Armenian genocide is used by Turkey's allies to pressure Turkey. As many in Turkey note, European nations don't have the same passion towards their own genocidal campaigns. And correct me if I'm wrong but the US does not recognise many (most?) genocides committed by Europe.

  33. I don't think any of these parties will be embarassed but for different reasons. There were always IS cells in Idlib plotting assassinations. And for Assad and Russia, IS was always a secondary concern compared to Rebels. They gladly used IS vs Rebels.

I hope he engages with this. Since race and gender is omnipresent, it's easy to assume correlation when it might just be a case of coincidence. Perhaps he is rude and you are black but there is no correlation between the two? (hoping I don't get labeled as a white supremacist)

  35. I almost forgot that most dramatic event in 2017. It was the definition of metastasis and perfectly symbolises the role of IS in Syria.

  36. Is this the beginning of the Shiite civil war we all predicted would happen after ISIS was conquered?
